I enrolled in Kaplan University in April of this year, after first dealing with a pushy salesman who insisted that it was important that I got everything taken care of RIGHT AWAY. I processed my enrollment and sent them my tuition fee. If only I knew then the things I found out shortly thereafter.
After a kind, patient, and compassionate representative from another online school, Colorado Technical University Online, called and offered me a WAY better deal, I realized what a huge mistake I had made by letting Kaplan's Stevan Lewis push me into something so fast. I thought it would be okay because the Enrollment Agreement stated that as long as I withdrew before the first calendar day of classes, I would receive a full refund on my tuition fee, a fee of $95, which I paid online with my prepaid Visa card.
This, however, was not the case at all. After insisting that I wanted to withdraw from Kaplan, Stevan directed me to the person who handled withdraws, a Ms. Tracey Greene.
That's when everything went down the tubes because after I spoke with Tracey Greene she too tried to talk me out of withdrawing, but I insisted. She told me she wanted me to think about it over the weekend, and get back with her by e-mail or telephone on Monday, May 7th, 2007, with my final decision. I wasn't set to start classes until May 8th, so I would still beat the deadline.
I sent her the e-mail on May 7th telling her that I was sure that I wanted to withdraw and she responded the next day telling me that my refund would be processed within 6-8 weeks which would have been anywhere from June 18th to July 2nd. The date that I am writing this on is September 20th, which is coming up on 5 months since I received the e-mail.
I have continuously checked my credit card balance online since then, and I have never received the refund on my tuition fee that I paid so long ago. I feel that Kaplan not only owes me the $95, but they also owe me pain and suffering for the time that I have worried and wondered about what I was supposed to do without the money. To me, $95 is alot of money... maybe not to Kaplan, but they should have to pay for the pain they've caused me.

RUN!!! Unless you had already filled out the FAFSA and had it sent to Kaplan, there is NO WAY they would know how much Pell you were entitled to, nor whether you would be able to get a student loan. And I've been in higher education most of my adule life, and I don't know a SINGLE admissions officer who would call you after standard business hours unless by pre-arrangement. They work at night sometimes so they can talk to the working parents of the 18-year olds, but certainly not after maybe 8 pm.
Trust me. I've been doing this a long time. It distresses me to no end to see how people are getting ripped off because admissions "counselors" (who are really just salesmen) take advantage of those who don't understand how this works. That's what keeps them in business financially.

Potential Student for Kaplan University

I received a call on 7/21/09 from Kaplan University after entering my info in an email I received. 3 hours later I was almost enrolled and told that I had received a Pell Grant for $4014 and a loan for $3300+. I became leary after being told I had been approved for $57,500 and could access that money any way I wanted to as long as I finished school and it was paid for. The Stephanie Franquiz
Financial Aid Service Counselor was so detailed about everything which made me suspicious and (Jason Simon, Admission Advisor) was really talkative. Stephanie told me there was no hurry and I could get back to them before I signed and paid enrollement fee. Jason on the other hand seemed upset when I said I'd do it the following day.
Well I've never known of a University to call me after 10pm which is what happened later the night of the 21st. We had made an appt for 10am the 22nd. There were so many calls from Kaplan and I had a few emails from Jason and one from Stephanie as well.
Well the calls haven't stopped coming in at all hours of the day and night and yesterday I received an email stating my file had been closed due to my failure to keep an appt for 10am on the 22nd. I told Jason I was placing and showing dogs and my entire day was tied up doing that. I didn't get an opportunity to call him back figuring business hours were over. He told me that first day he got off in two hours which would have been normal daytime work hours. Last night he called me after 10pm. I had called him after receiving the file closed email to let him know I was upset that he would close my file after missing one appt. He said that told him students who do that aren't serious about enrolling. I told him after talking with me for 3hrs he should have known how serious I was and he agreed. I also told him I wasn't prepared to be toyed with just because I didn't electronically sign the enrollment form when it benefited him. I informed him Stephanie told me I had plenty of time to wait and think it over. He apologized and then proceeded to call me after 10pm again to get me to sign. I asked him who works that late and he said he does. Who does that? What University does that?
I know I clicked accept for something in there but was informed at the time that I didn't owe anything because I hadn't used anything. Am I in the clear here because I haven't as much as seen an instructor, class, or anything. I don't want to be liable for something in this. They also told me I would have access to $57,500 when I needed it. Is this for real? Who does that?

In the process of withdrawing also
AUTHOR: Trying To Wdraw - (U.S.A.)

I realized about an hour after enrolling that I had made a mistake and tried calling my admissions advisor to no avail. I have now sent a fax and email to him indicating that I want to cancel my enrollment agreement (supposedly you can do this within 3 days of signing if you do so in writing to "management" - that could be the problem...who is considered management? I sent a fax to the attention of "admissions manager." Also, after reading this post, I sent an email to Tracey Greene forwarding a copy of my email to my admissions advisor and stating my immediate cancellation of the enrollment agreement and withdraw from the school - also apparently ok to do if 7 days prior to classes starting. I am not scheduled to start until 6/10 (so about 3 weeks) and have not even registered for a class yet. I will update to let you know how things go. Has anyone else been sucessful at withdrawing without incurring further bills. I honestly don't even care if I get my refund as long as I don't "owe" them any money and don't have to start fighting bills.
