Today at 10:55am I went to the KFC location on 14490
Memorial Drive in Houston, TX. I ordered a Medium
Drink and a Large order of Potato Wedges. Once I
completed my drink, I opened my cup only to find that
there are several dead gnats (or small flies) floating
in my cup. (I have kept the cup for evidence.)
I am 5 1/2 months pregnant! Everything that I injest
is contributing to my baby's health. Not only am I
concerned for myself, my baby is at risk also. I am
disgusted and sickened by this event.
I contacted the manager of the location at 1:28 pm to
notify her of the contents of my drink. She aksed me
"Well, what do you want me to do?" I replied that I
wanted the contact information to the corporate
headquarters so that I could file a complaint. She
hung up on me.
I called the corporate headquarters and spoke with a
customer service representative. She took down my
complaint and said that a member of upper management
will be in touch with me regarding the matter.
I would like to at least let others know to be careful
about fast food restaurants.

Dang Peter and i was almost impressed by your first response. You should REALLY stick with your own troubles, like getting rip'd-off by the gay strippers. Geesh , he could be my neighbor, now wouldn't THAT be a rip-off!

Hate To Tell You
AUTHOR: Cory - (U.S.A.)

I hate to tell you but ol' crazy Pete is correct. That girl did the study of the ice at fast food places. She found that the water in the toilets was cleaner then the ice in the cups. They actually clean the toilets, can't say the same for the ice machines, the scoops or the bins. Don't know about the gnats.

Peter, Shut up!!!!!!!!!!!! Leave her alone. Get a life. Stop trying to find fault with the consumer. She did nothing wrong!!!!!!!!!! You must work at one of those type of places. you are trying to lay blame on her for something that she had no control over.

You should hardly be complaining about gnats ...

... since you mentioned how much you love to eat ice. Have you seen the expose on a popular television news show about ice in fast food restaurants? Ice at most fast food establishment is laden with harmful bacteria and parasites, including e.Coli, due to improper storage and handling of the ice and/or the ice scoop. You mentioned being concerned about the gnats, stating "everything that I injest
is contributing to my baby's health." Gnats, while annoying, are not harmful. What about all the harmful things that you cannot see that you are ingesting? You may want to do some research on fast food restaurant ice before consuming your next cupful.

Erika's Response
AUTHOR: Erika - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Monday, September 25, 2006
Yes, I did go through the drive thru. Nothing seemed unusual with the drink as I was drinking it. Nothing came through the straw except liquids so I didn't bother to think about anything other than ice in my cup.
I opened the cup after I finished the drink because while I have been pregnant I love ice. I was planning to eat it when I saw the bugs. Needless to say, I open the cups of all drinks before drinking them if I go through a resturant's drive thru window.
Unfortuantely, I haven't been able to get over it yet and I have not returned to another KFC. Maybe in the future I will but right now, I just don't want to risk it.
Thanks for all your comments.

Question for Erika ...
AUTHOR: Peter - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Sunday, September 24, 2006
I am curious how you noticed the "gnats" only after you finished your drink and opened the lid to look inside the cup? Did you not sense a funny sensation as you were drinking the soda that necessitating opening the cup while it was still partially full? What caused you to open your cup once you "completed your drink"? I find this interesting since you went through the drive through, refills would not have been available and I cannot see any other reason to open one's cup upon completion of the drink.

Don't let this stop you from enjoying good kfc stores
AUTHOR: Tammy - (U.S.A.)

I was just writing to say that I feel for you I have past experience working as a shift manager in a Indiana Kfc and please do not let this episode cause you to judge all Kfcs by it. Sometimes a bad, negative visit can make a customer get a preconceived idea that by visiting another one this will happen but it is not likely. Kfc usually strives to be a nice place to eat and then you encounter some who have no regard for cleanliness as in all restaurants. So maybe consider avoiding that one and finding another cleaner establishment. Good luck.

Try this next time, if you're the bold type...

I've a habit of taking pickles off my fast food sandwiches which means I lift the bun off to do so. Imagine my surprise one time to find a dead fly tucked neatly away in the lettuce! I'll leave out the chain name even though they're no longer around but here's what I did..
Went back in, politely waited my turn at the busy counter. When my time came, I gently explained (as loud as I could without yelling)about my situation. "I'm so sorry but there's a dead fly in my sandwich!!!!".
That was enough to get the attention of everyone in the building. Customers in line behind me decided to go elsewhere, others customers started checking their food. Kids refused to eat theirs. Needless to say I got a new sandwich and had my revenge.
The trick is to be polite, non threatening, and have a little fun.

Odd

I'm not a fan of KFC, so I don't go there often, maybe once or twice a year. But when I do, the local place hands you a cup and you go to the counter and fill up your own drink. Don't know if it's the same at your location. But to have gnats in the drink, they'd either have to be in the cup, prior to being filled, or in the ice. Did they hand you a filled cup or did you fill it yourself? Most places are going to the fill it yourself route. Even the frickin' movies. I always look in the cup before I put anything into it.

Lavoncia...KFC is a FRANCHISE...They ARE independently owned..
AUTHOR: Steve - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Thursday, September 14, 2006
Lavonia,
It's sad that you were a manager for KFC and do not know the corporate structure.
Each location is independently owned and operated, however, under the franchis agreement, they agree to standards of operation. The corporate management has the job of enforcing these standards under the franchise agreement.
You work for KFC through the franchised location.

Most are individually owned
AUTHOR: Tim - (U.S.A.)

Most KFC's are franchises. In other words, they are individually owned. Yum! Brands owns the intellectual property of KFC and licenses it to individual store owners.
There are also several "corporate owned" KFCs. If you worked for one of these, you could easily form the impression that all KFCs are corporate owned, but that's not the case.

I would like to know where you got your information about KFC'c being owned by different owners? I worked for KFC as a manager and know that they are all owned by YumBrands Inc. There are district managers for every area that might consist of 5 to 10 stores but it is still owned by just one company.
I am sorry to hear about both incidents and If you keep complaining then believe me something will be done.

How disgusting
AUTHOR: Ginger - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Thursday, June 08, 2006
That is really nasty...many years ago when I was pregnant with my daughter I ate at our local KFC and when I bit into my chicken I got a mouthful of feathers...Management immediately gave me a refund and offered a free meal I accepted my refund but to this day have a hard time eating anything from KFC. Your major complaint should be their lack of customer service.
Good luck to you in getting a response as most KFC are individually owned and operated. Your best bet would be to contact the owner of the store where you were at.
