Lane Bryant does not honor its own gift receipts.

I recently returned some items that I'd receved as gifts and found out that they will only issue store credit, even if you have a gift receipt. They do not consider a gift receipt an ORIGINAL receipt, even though it is offered and issued at the same time as the original purchase, so they treat the gift receipt the same as if there were no receipt at all.

I questioned this practice and the reason for issuing gift receipts at all, but all I got was prerehearsed answers about store policy and how I am welcome to find other items in the store.

This experience confirms the decision I made several years ago to stop shopping at Lane Bryant. Now others need to know about it. They would benefit from more customer-friendly policies.

#7 UPDATE Employee

there is a very good reason to ask for/bring in a gift receipt

I work for Lane Bryant and after several years in the retail industry I can promise you that the company has some of the most customer friendly policies out there.

Taking a return into most stores (LB included) with no receipt will get you store credit at the lowest sale price of that item, because we have no way to verify how much you paid for it. At least bringing in a gift receipt will guarantee that you'll receive credit for exactly the amount it originally cost.

If a company blindly refunded cash for every gift return it would end up in serious trouble.

thats just a standard practice that all stores do. because of idiots that steal, unfortuanetly good intention customers have to suffer. i wouldnt even go to a store with a gift receipt thinking i could get money back. no offense its just common sense....plus i've been to lane bryant before...and although i hate their clothes (i dont blame u for returning)...i know they have it posted and its on receipts. i am a stickler for reading fine print....its just the way u gotta be.

I don't know how it is in California, but. . .

Having used many gift receipts, this is the first and only time I've had a gift receipt treated this way. If what you say is true in your area, this there is really no reason to ask for or include a gift receipt. It has no purpose.

Yes, the receipt contains all information that the original does. . .

The only difference is that it not printed plainly on the receipt, it is contained in the bar code which the store scans. It contains the items, price paid, how it was paid for, the date, the store, and the clerk. And I did ask for a cash refund.

There was no RipOff

All the gift receipt does is
1. Provide proof that the item was bought at that store
2. Provide the price that was paid for the item.

As the previous answer said this is the policy at most major stores. Since you were offered a store credit you were not going to loose out on the money, so there is no Rip Off.

For your clarification. The only way to get cash is to provide the original receipt that shows the item was paid by cash(or check if over the specified time). If the person who gave you the gift has the receipt that shows it was cash, they can give you the receipt for you to return the item(s).

Now, if the purchase was paid for by a credit card it would go back on the original credit card. In this case it does not matter if it is a Gift Receipt or not. It is the policy of the credit card companies(not the store) that the credit must go back on the card issued.

Ask for cash next time

Most (if not all) of the larger chain stores have this policy, not just Lane Bryant. Check the policies at Dillards, JCPenney, Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy, etc. and I will guarantee that they all do business the same way.

If everyone could exchange all of their gifts for cash after the holidays, the stores would be screwed.

Its not like the money came out of your pocket and you're still getting store credit for whatever you want, so you're not out anything. Where's the rip off?
