Simply, I called and volunteered to pay NCO what I owed them. They gave me a settlement amount, of which I paid 10 minutes after, without batting an eyelash. I owed the money, and was good for it, and wanted to make good on it. But before I did, I asked them several times: "If I pay this money today, by Western Union, are we square? Do I owe ANYTHING else to you?" They said "not a single penny. We are looking forward to clearing your name and account with this $710 you owe".

The lady asked me to call back after I paid so she could "lift my name off of Chex Systems". But when I did, I got "Ooh. I am so sorry. We found another $160 you owe, and you have to pay it today, or else we will never take your name off of Chex Ststems, and in fact, we will tell the IRS and garnish your wages and put a mark on your credit report that can never come off, ever". This sounded weird.

She wanted me to send the money to her name personally, not even to NCO. Her name was Jennifer. She also said that "were not even sure if there is more money you owe to someone else, so at this time we cannot take your name off of Chex Systems because another "file could come in" with my name on it and it would be more money I would owe.

They couldn't tell me what this extra mysterious money was for, for what company, and that company's account #. Basically, they were trying to steal money from me. I dont know what to do, or who to call. But you cannot get more blatant than that. That sounds like attempted robbery doesnt it? That takes real b***s to try and pull off, man. I feel like calling the FBI. How many people actually got swindled by this type of thing I wonder?

AUTHOR: John - (U.S.A.)

This posting is "Exhibit A" for what NOT to do when dealing with debt collectors:

NEVER pay by wiring money
Always get written terms up front first PRIOR to paying
Request validation of the debt first when you are initially contacted by debt collectors.

"will never take your name off of Chex Ststems, and in fact, we will tell the IRS and garnish your wages and put a mark on your credit report that can never come off, ever".

This is why one should never talk to debt collectors over the phone and insist that all communications be in writing. There are at least two big FDCPA violations in this one sentence.

Note to poster: Read up on the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act...understand your rights....
