Just received a call from Portfolio Recovery Associates (PRA) @5:50pm. Woman on phone said she was with legal department and was trying to collect on a debt for a credit card company.
She was calling a private cell number that was NOT in MY name, but my boyfriends. When I asked how she got the number, she said it came with the debt. I have had the number for about 7 months, and the debt is supposedly more than 9 years old.
When I asked for information on the alleged debt, she said that it had been with a certain credit card company and was "charged off" in 2003. I said I had no recollection of the debt. (I did not have any credit cards at that time in my life) At which point I said even if this was the case, it was beyond the statute of limitations (SOL). She pretty much ignored what I said, and continued in a very aggressive tone that this was a legal matter, and if I did not want to be sued I needed to make payment arrangements.
I told her that the alleged debt was nine years old, and that SOL in North Carolina (where I live) had expired years ago. She again said that i needed to pay the presumed debt. Once more i told her that the SOL had expired, and that i did not owe them a debt. She very rudely said "hold on" and put me on hold, and never came back. Of course, I hung up.
One of my issues is that my mother and I have the exact same name and many things on our credit reports are crossed. (I have been battling that for 20 years) I have no idea if this is her debt or not, and really don't care as it is a charged off debt of nine years, and PRA is attempting to collect on something they shouldn't be.
I guess my best bet is to write up a formal cease and desist letter and send to them? I don't have any account numbers or reference numbers though, does that make a difference?
