Portfolio Recovery 20 Year old debt trying to be collected! Norfolk Virginia

I Received a letter in January of 2009 stating I owed 1600.00 from a credit card bill from 1989. I asked for proof that this was true, I had no recollection of this debt still being outstanding nor any proof. I was 19 years old. I didnt keep records then but since then I've bought homes, cars and have excellent credit. They refused to give me any proof and threatened me by saying this would go on my credit report. Our lawyer suggested I contact our Attorney General and not to pay them.
