we lived in upstate ny and our policy was $800 for 2 cars (6 months). we opened that policy in june 2004, and put down 2 months of insurance. since our policy was for 6 months, we would only have 4 remaining payments and a "free month", which u actually pay for when u open the policy.
Well it is now september. we have been paying our premiums on time, and we have to move to maryland for my job. when we called progressive, the rep said she had to transfer us to a maryland rep. when the maryland rep gave us our new quote, he said that we would have to cancel the new york policy and open up a new policy for maryland. they would not be able to transfer policies even though it is the same cars and the same policy, just a different state. so we would have to cancel the new york policy, and I would lose the extra month that i paid for, and then put down another 2 months premium for the maryland policy.
they also said that if i enrolled in the automatic payment through my checking account, my policy would be $735. If i chose not to do that (because i don't like to pay overdraft charges to the bank) my policy would jump to $815. Now can anyone tell me why they would charge me an extra $80 just for not enrolling in the automated payment? This I find ridiculous.

Could it maybe be the premium for the new area you live in (with different loss exposures) is $815 and that you may qualify for a discount if you use automatic withdrawal? Possibly you are offered the discount as it saves the company money sending you bills in the mail, sending you late payment notices and saves you the cost of stamps every month?
From my personal experience I save a percentage or so by having my auto loan taken directly out of my account. Are they charging me more by not having this done or perhaps are they giving me a discount if I take advantage of the service?
