My first book is with PA, I now have four other contracts with REAL publishers. I wrote them trying to get out of my contract, citing the complaints I filed . This is their response:

Dear Ms. :

Do not address us in such a tone. Your facts are wrong, your accusations are wrong, and your insinuations are wrong. Worst of all, and most unusual of all, you call our integrity into question.

The content of your statements is so unusual, so far from reality, and so very bizarre, that we will not stoop to even respond to them. The word libelous would be appropriate. Suffice it to say, that everything you say is simply, factually, wrong, and is easily proven to be so. Whomever gave you this misinformation is very pathetically misinformed.

Your request is denied, and we will expect your apology.

Thank you,

RE: PublishAmerica contract and publishing non-ethics

I'd like to file a complaint
They claim that they only accept 10% of manuscripts, will have it in tens of thousands of bookstores and you will be published by a traditional publisher. They are reviewed as a "vanity press" after you check them out.

In regard to their actual practice:
Your book is not available in brick and mortar bookstores and libraries
Your book is not returnable if a bookstore owner/manager should stock it 7-year-long contract is considered in improper amount of time Your book is published by a vanity press PublishAmerica will not apply for the CIP, which allows it to be bought by libraries

PublishAmerica overprices the books
PublishAmerica offers a nonstandard discount
PublishAmerica's business model is to sell to their own authors
PublishAmerica's books are NOT edited--certainly not line-by-line as they claim on their web site but have since admitted that they only edit for grammar and spelling
PublishAmerica accepts approximately 80% of submitted manuscripts [most publishers reject 99% of their submissions] (One manuscript was 300 pages but the same 30 pages done over 10 times documented)
PublishAmerica will only accept credit card orders over the phone when booking for one of their seminars or to purchase your own titles

I replied: Expect more letters to the BBB and attorney general then.

Concerning blanket rejection of authors at Publish America

AUTHOR: Moonlaker - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, July 28, 2009

I would liken anyone who might reject all Publish America authors to someone who rejects any athlete not already playing professionally.
While I would have to agree that Publish America is obviously not the majors, there is talent to be found nonetheless.
Such prejudice may even be why these authors, with some "spit and polish", are not with true, traditional publishers.
Perhaps a profitable niche, just waiting for the right person to fall into, is taking the time to scout the "crappy" POD, and vanity press offerings. Then, if I am correct, they may take the authors to the next level.
I find it mathematically impossible that, among the thousands of us putting ourselves out there, that some talent does not exist.

Published Writer?

AUTHOR: Joe - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, May 14, 2005

Excuse me, Chad, but "that" is not spelled "thet". I won't waste my time correcting the rest of your paragraph, Mr. Published Writer (who wrote a book that rocks).

Yeah, I'm sure...

I find it frightful that "writers" such as yourself actually have books floating around out there. They look like the real thing, but contain a big surprise to the unsuspecting buyer.

They are filled with crap, spelling errors and other ramblings from idiot writers who can't construct a five-word sentence.

Publish America commits a fraud on the book-buying public. I won't buy any book put out by this publisher. In fact, they are so bad that bookstores won't stock them on their shelves.

If a PA writer was any good, he would be picked up by the real book publishers. Only the losers turn to PA, yet they are too stupid to know it. They think their books "rock".

Do a google search on ATLANTA NIGHTS by Travis Tea. It reveals more about Publish America than I could list here.

Dogging the Writers this is the second time that I have seen something about PA publishing garbage

AUTHOR: Chad - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, March 22, 2005

See, this is the second time that I have seen something about PA publishing garbage. I have read 4 PA books and none of them were any crappier than the stuff that you see in the bookstores now. Other books that I saw on their site looked crappy and I am sure that PA does publish some bad books, but others are just from talented authors who don't know any better. I too am upset about the dishonesty in their dealings, being a victim myself, but that doesn't change the fact thet my book ROCKS!

Did you research this company first?

AUTHOR: Joe - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, March 05, 2005

Had you researched Publish America prior to submitting your manuscript you would have spared yourself the heartache. The Internet is chock full of information about PA.

It took less than five minutes for me to hone in on PA's tactics, which aren't hidden. It's a Publish on Demand (POD) agency that does not create a hard book until an order had been requested.

You signed your book over to them for 7 years, which was part of your contract. They paid you a dollar advance.

The responsibility for selling your books falls on your shoulders. PA makes it no secret. It's also no secret that they want you to purchase their products.

Had you not known all this prior to signing that contract then the blame rests on your shoulders. You should have found out about this company before you did business with them.

I am not defending Publish America. They take advantage of the ignorant and those who think they've hit the gravy train without working for it. They publish garbage from those who can't spell, write or edit. Bookstores will not stock any books published by Publish America. The books are junk and will not sell to anyone other than the authors friends and family members.

Research Atlanta Nights by Travis Tea to find out more about Publish America. You'll laugh yourself silly.

Next time, research the business first, not after you've signed their contract and accepted any money from them.
