This pass Friday, July 18, 2008 my daughter, a friend and I went to celebrate my daughter passing her driving test at the Red Lobsters on Cobb Parkway , in Smyrna . We enjoyed our dinner and upon getting the tab, I carefully zeroed out the tip line, wrote in the amount of the tab (without tip) and left the tip in cash. Thinking this was pretty clear I didnt think much of it. Well being on a budget I always check my statement online for charges made with my debt card the previous week and go figure they added an additional $5 (which is the exact amount I left in cash); but I zeroed out the line. I mean, I literally wrote a zero and drew a line through it; and since I write pretty big there was no mistaking what I wrote. Who authorized this charge? Since this has cleared my account I am a bit bothered that this happened, regardless of the amount. I did not authorize this anything about the amout of our meal.
I called the restaurant, ask for the manager (Davy James general manager). Mr. James spoke with me briefly as I explained why I was calling; then he put me on hold and didnt return. He had someone else come on the line to ask for my name, telephone number, and the check number and said Mr. James was busy and would check into this and call me back. This I thought was unprofessional, and 24hrs later he has not returned my telephone call.
How many times have restaurants gotten away with these $5 - $10 over charges? Since most of us dont check for these types of incidentals they probably get away with it more times than not. Im just saying How much did you really tip your waiter? Until this is resolved this waiter got a $10 tip.
How much did you really tip your waiter?
Needless to say, I will pay with cash regardless of the restaurant going forward.

Illegal

Not only is it wrong to add a tip to someone's credit card, it's downright illegal. A girl in our town was doing exactly that to credit card transactions at the local pizza hut, and when they caught her, she did some serious jail time. Think about it. It's theft, pure and simple.

#5 UPDATE Employee
Server not too bright .....

I have worked for Red Lobster for 11 years, ( in Oregon) and several years ago we had a server who would fill in her own tip on charge slips that the guest would leave no tip[ on, She eventually got caught doing this and was immediately terminated. No warnings, no write-ups....nothing. That is absolutely not tolerated by the company. You can bet if that is what happened in your case.......that server won't have another opportunity to do it again to another guest. As for you blaming the restaurant for these over-charges as you put it............ it isn't the restaurants fault if they don't know the server is doing it.

Not to worry

Yes, this is a very inconvenient thing to happen to you, but it is easily fixed. As for the employee who works there...well, they are very stupid....they will be written up, 3 write ups for the same thing will have them terminated (at Red Lobster). That employee will also have to pay back any false charges of gift cards and credit/debit cards to the restaurant. Any server who tries to make an extra buck by doing this is risking their job for such a risky dumb action.

First of all, what kind of jerk goes to Red Lobster with two other people and tips $5? Real classy.

Get a grip

The amount that you allegedly were charged was the PRE-AUTHORIZED amount (aka, the amount of your check plus a standard 15-20% tip). This is how it works when you pay with a debit card. They make sure that you have enough money in your account to pay for both your meal and tip. Then at the end of the night, the amount is reconciled in the event that a person does not leave a tip or leaves less than the amount that was pre-authorized. Get a grip. This is how it's done at restaurants everywhere. Don't like it? Then pay with cash instead of a debit card.

Some things to check.

First just because the amount shows up on-line does not mean that it has actually "posted". Very often a resturant will "over authorize" an amount assuming you will leave the tip on the card you used. They then process the actual amount of the charge that you did pay. This can take several days for them to post the real amount. During this time you will see a misleading amount on-line.
Now, if this amount has actually "posted" you need to dispute it, by following the dispute procedures for your bank. It sounds like you used your Debit Card and not a regular Credit Card, so disputes don't work the way they you may hope. Unlike a Credit Card the bank will investigate but they will not return the money(even temporarily) until their investigation is over and they find you are correct.
