I responded to a Craigslist ad about a property of interest. Nothing seemed too off about the price and/or photos. I got a response back and it is virtually identical to the previous post on here. It is as follows:

Thank you for your interest in our home for rent.

The rental we have available for rent today is a 1 bedroom 1.0 bath with garage in a high demand area. The rental has a washing machine and dryer.

There have not been any pets in the home so there are no smells, stains or odors. The home is pet friendly with no breed restrictions, we do not charge a fee or require a deposit but if your pet damages the property you are responsible for repairs.

To rent our property we require the following:

1. A valid Driver's License or Photo ID
2. The 1st months rent
3. Background check for each applicant
4. Rental Agreement (month to month, 6 months or 1 year), I'll bring this to the viewing

You can complete the background check online using Rental Verified: link.

This is an affordable way for me to screen applicants based on prior tenant history and employment information. If you have a felony or poor rental history, I am flexible and I'll work with you.

This property rents quickly, let me know when you've completed your background check and are ready to schedule a viewing. It is in a .pdf, you can print it and bring to the viewing or email it to me.

What's the best contact number for you? Are you available tomorrow?

I will be available tomorrow, Monday morning.

I did fill in the Verified Rental thing and sent her its results. I don't see how it could have any info on there that could be hurtful to me. But if this is showing up as a scam, then there must be something bad! She acted like she was free this morning and now I've sent her 3 emails with no response. The rental verified thing was $29.95 too and I only paid it because I thought this could actually be some place I could see myself living. Wtf? Why are crazy people out there scamming??

Rentalverified.com

I too received a response to an email I sent while looking for an apartment through Craigslist.  It looks very similar to the one you received.  This person gave me a link to rentalverified.com and I entered the information and paid the fee.  I replied to the 'renter's' email but did not yet give her my phone number or copy of my report.  (whew) After surfing the net for more apartments, I came upon this site reporting the scam.

Well, I made some quick calls, both to my bank and rentalverified.com.  I have the bank watching for negative activity for rentalverified.com, and was assured by the rentalverified.com customer service people that the company is real and unless I found them through Craigslist, they can be trusted.  Not like my words mean anything to anyone, but I trust the people I talked to as they apologized for my inconvenience and have refunded all of my money.!  [I will continue to watch my account and kick myself daily for falling for this one though.]

So, I guess I want to point out to the public here, that rentalverified.com seems to be legit, (as I have talked to three different customer service people there already today).  Their Terms and Conditions state that if you found them through a craigslist ad/email, you can let them know and they will refund your money.  They did for me.  It is the 'people' on craigslist that are suspicious.  How unfortunate-we can trust no one on that site.
