I recently paid off my Capital One card and was surprised to find a $19.95 charge from a company by the name of ScoreSense. I immediately called the company and learned that I had been charged this amount since October of 2012! To my recollection I had never used the services of this company, nor was I aware of this account.

I immediately called the ScoreSense customer service number and spoke with an individual by the name of Connie. According to Connie I signed up for an account for a charge of $1 to receive my 3 bureau credit report, but that $1 was for a free trial which ballooned into a monthly membership of $19.95.

The one issue which bothered me the most was that the company in my 13 months of being billed never sent me any form of communication either via regular mail or email. When I questioned this lack of communication I learned that they send out regular email communications, but that my email address was entered in wrong. So, if they had my wrong email address that means that I likely never received a lot of the information that I was supposed to be entitled to as a member. If I received regular emails I also would have also likely learned about the fact that I had an existing account.

I know I am supposed to check each statement, but I have four kids aged 9 and under, so this is something that is sometimes done in a rush. Basically, as long as my statements look like they are in the ballpark I often times move forward in my busy day. So, I do take responsibility for the delay in discovering this account.

However, when I spoke when Connie in customer care she was exceedingly rude and condescending. She encouraged me to go to the FBI and file a complaint. She told me I couldn't talk to a supervisor because he would say the exact same thing. I told her that I was very upset that I have been being billed for an account for 13 months without my knowledge and without my consent. I also told her that I felt that since they had my incorrect email that I was not even in receipt of any of my membership benefits.

Connie finally put me through to David who was a supervisor. David was nice and understanding on the phone. David placed a refund request on my behalf for half of the membership time and gave me some confidence that my request would be approved. However, this morning when I woke up I received an email claiming that only a one month credit would be issued.

As a result I am filing claims on this website (and similar sites), disputing this charge with my credit card company, and going to further investigate how I can recover some of my funds while also raising consumer awareness. I hope that anyone in need of a credit monitoring service will use other more reputable companies.
