My sister recently made a mistake and stole from a shopko department store. She is 17, and yes she knows she made a huge mistake, and was totally in the wrong. When she got caught, she was of course detained, for hours, and all items that she tried to steal were calculated to make a total of 150.00. It was a couple of bottles of perfume and makeup and some items of clothing or something like that. The cops were called to the store where it was reported. The cops then called her mother since she was a minor, and informed her mother of the situation. They also gave her a ticket of 162.00 for stealing. I thought this was a fair punishment for her, and I believe that she will never ever steal again after going though all that.
Then yesterday she got a letter in the mail that states that Shopko is suing her to the tune off 455.00! I was like huh? How can they do that? I have never heard of that, but because of a wisconsin law that says a business can sue no more than twice the amount of the items stolen IF the items cannot be resold, it is something they can do.
I am shocked as to why Shopko feels that these items can not be resold and why the feel it is purposful to sue a 17 year old who had a clean record before this. Besides the crap law that Wisconsin has, which I am sure does justice for some businesses and I understand the purpose of having the law, but I honestly think that is ridiculous.
They won't even provide information about why they felt these items could not be resold, they also only give you 21 days to pay the 455.00, there is no way a student who only works part time can pay that in 21 days! So it's on the parent, this is crap and I will no longer give my business to them, ever. I understand people who steal are doing something wrong and it hurts companies revenue and they have to drive up prices for consumers because of stuff like this, but I feel that this is ridiculous and I personally will have nothing to do with them.

The store (as per WI law) has the right to make this request as it is a civil matter. It is true they are able to recover upto three times the value of the unsellable merchandise but there are also other damages added into that figure. For example the time (wages) of the Loss Prevention Associate and thier witness. The cost of the papework annd so on. This allows the coompany to recover a portion of the cost of watching, detaining and waiting for the arrival of law enforcement when the LP associate could be involved in other activities. Contrary to popular belief they are not only there to catch shoplifters. THe law is on the books under civil law, if you wnat more information this will explain it in more detail. Sorry she got caught but statistics show that LP personel only apprehend about 1 in 10 shoplifters.

your sister (the thief) went into the store and attempted to steal $150 worth of stuff and got caught (this time)and as a result of this, the store has the ability of getting back from your sister the "thief" $400 bucks above and beyond what she intended to steal in the first place. And you think that is unfair...boo h*o....
In some way you feel that the store is unjustified to seek recourse from your sisters actions. I say tough sh*t, good for Shopko, I like a store who takes action against criminals. Remember Angela your sister is not the victim here.... all the other honest consumers and retail stores are. I hope both you and your thief sister stay away from Shopko from now on, maybe the prices will go down......just think if your sister lived in Turkey they would of cut off her hand for being a grubby little thief.
