I pulled into a Super 8 Motel armed with the coupon that said, "With coupon at check in. Based on availability only. Not valid with reservations, other discounts, during holidays or special events. expires 9/30/04"
I asked the gentleman behind the counter if I could use the coupon and he said no because there was a lobster festival in town this week. He said the price would be 125.00. I really didn't think they had a lobster festival but, I knew they were having one over an hour away in Rockland Maine. Other people in line were staying, thinking they would not get a room anywhere.
I went across the street to the Econo Lodge Motel on Western Ave in Augusta Maine and asked if they took the coupon and they said yes. I asked if they had a Lobster Festival going on in town and they said"no, it was in Rockland"
I went back to my room and called Super 8 and got the man's name PAT and told him he should not lie to people. I told him I would report him to the Super 8 headquarters and to the BBB.

Based on availability only

Based on availability only! That is what that means! That means that just because you're "Armed" (that's so stupid) with the coupon does NOT mean they have to honor it! We have the same stupid coupon, and 99% of the time I don't honor it because I don't feel like dealing with people being Nit-Picky! As far as the comment preceeding yours, royalties are 10% of all revenue that must be paid to Cendant! You people and your coupons, I tell ya, motel owners need to STOP putting them out, because the only type of people that use them are the picky ones, they want first floor, king bed,non-smoking, in the back, or near the lobby, or practically tell you what room number they want. You can report him all you want, Based on availability only, means just that. Legally they only have to advertise one room at the price to make the coupon legal, and maybe that's what they did.

It doesn't surprise me!

I worked for this hotel - for literally 3 hours!
I was hired as Assistant Manager. During my first morning, the owner left and told me to go over the books to learn the "ropes". I have gone to college for Hospitality/Tourism, so I knew what I was looking at.
I questioned the one other girl on about a particular room that was marked "renovation" - she told me that the room was NOT being renovated, but is being rented out at $25/night on a long-term rental to one person (they had been there over 6 months), and for the owner to "avoid royalties" with the corporation, he puts in the computers that the room is being renovated and he pockets the cash.
If you don't work in the hospitality business, you probalby don't realize that the royalties are only 1-5%, depending on volume and the company. Lets give it the benefit of the doubt and say it's the MOST at 5% - that means that this guy (the owner) is lying to the corporation and illegally withholding royalties to pocket a whole $1.25 a day!? I wanted nothing to do with it and walked out.
Doesn't surprise me at all that the management wanted to charge you $125 for a room that is over an hour away from the Lobster Festival.
It's too bad that there are business people out there like that....
