I am about to be a new mother and had registered with the Target Baby Registry as well as Babies R Us. My baby shower was held on May 10, 2008 with over 100 guests invited. As I was opening gifts, I noticed that I received many doubles and sometimes triples of things only from the Target gift registry. There was not one duplicate item from Babies R Us. Some guests included gift receipts with the gift, but most did not. Most people, like myself, believe that if it is a gift from a registry, then it is something the recipient has picked out and either needs or wants, and the store the gift is purchased from will take care of the registry so others cannot buy the same gift repeatedly. Therefore, a gift receipt is really unnecessary. I went to a local Target store a few days later to return some of the duplicate items for store credit. Although I did not have gift receipts, every item was one I picked out and was on my registry, and was a duplicate because of Target's error. Although Target has a strict policy on returns and exchanges I did not think it would be a problem since I had a gift registry there and Target made the mistake. I was told the Target policy states if you do not have a receipt you can only receive up to twenty dollars, twice a year, on your drivers license. Whether it was a Target employee, a computer glitch, or a problem with the registry online or otherwise, Target is at fault for not taking the items OFF the registry when they were purchased the first time, therefore allowing others to buy items again and again. Target should not only be responsible for these mistakes, but also accountable. I do not think I should have to call family, friends and in some cases mere acquaintances asking for receipts for gifts bought for me. It is a rude thing to do and puts me in an extremely uncomfortable position. I entrusted Target with my registry and because Target is at fault, and every item I wanted credit for is a duplicate straight from the registry, I should not need any type of receipt for returning these items for store credit. I brought in a lot of business to Target by registering with them and feel my registry should be honored without question. My family and friends spent a lot of money in Target. The items I wished to return were all duplicates because of Target's error and worth about $200. Since I believe it is extremely awkward and in fact rude to call people asking for receipts after they went out of their way to buy me a present for my baby, then according to Target's policy, I will receive no more than $40 for all of these items, actually worth about $200. That to me in criminal. It is in fact, robbery. I was married two years ago and had bridal registries with other stores such as Fortunoff and Bed Bath and Beyond. I also now have a baby registry with Babies R Us. I have never once had a problem returning items from a registry, whether it was due to the company's error or not. I have never experienced as many problems with duplicate gifts like I have at Target, which says something about how the registry is run and handled, and even when I did receive a duplicate here and there at these other stores, I was able to return items for store credit without question, without a receipt, because it was on my registry and my registry was honored. I am not asking for cash back, only store credit. Target would not lose a penny this way. With all of today's technology, they must be able to scan my items and see they were purchased at a Target store and that they were all on my registry. This policy when applied to gift registries is just plain wrong and unfair. The company's motto is "expect more, pay less". They truly live up to this, because although I might pay less, I definately expected a lot more when I registered with this company. Warning to anybody who reads this: Do Not Register With Target!!!

If you are so totally unsatisfied with Target's policies, then why did you choose to register there in the first place? If the policies are too stringent for your liking, then perhaps you should have registered for everything at Babies R Us or wherever you are going to shop from now on.
Also, may I say that it was an extremely rude, tackless gesture to include copies of your letter to the CEO with all your "thank you notes." What a way of saying "thank you" by including a letter about how impossible it is to return your gifts. It does not sound like you are the least bit grateful for the time and thought that your partygoers put into buying your gifts and attending your shower. Such shame.

I just experienced the exact same issue with Target. I can't believe anyone who thinks any consumer should have to live with this return policy. Not only should we not have to live with it, we should fight it! That's exactly what I and anyone who will listen to me intend to do. It's the only way to not get ripped off. In this economy, it is stupid for Target to attempt to rip people off. They will lose in the long run when we all ban their stores.
In my case, I wasn't asking for a refund, only a credit to shop in their store. I was exchanging a duplicate item that I received at my shower. I was attempting to exchange something that was a target product, from my baby registry, unopened, that cost $30.
This is ridiculous and something needs to be done about it!

Does Customer service mean anything to you?

Im writing in defense of the OP. She as a consumer should have every right to retun the duplicate items no matter who was at fault for the glitch, it is clear to her, the family members, friends, employees of Target and any one who reads her complaint that she is a honest person not trying to abuse the system. ANYONE with an ounce of sense can see what went wrong. As a customer I would think that some Manager can refund her money for the items, its called customer service, she is unhappy with the items and has no use for them, she is not trying to abuse the system. I for one am disgusted with this policy, I have never abused the system and you better believe if I have an issue with an item and in good faith decide to return it, I will not put up with this policy for a sec. If there is such a hugh problem with people ripping you off then hire some one to deal with the problem.
Wendy personally if it were me I would keep complaining and go up the chain until someone is willing to do the right thing, There has to be at least one person with common sense there that has the power to over ride that policy, for issues just like this one. good luck.

Response to Target Employees idiotic rebuttal

This is a response to a Target employee's, Qwerty777, idiotic response to my original ripoff report about Target's registry flaws. This employee seems to think that it is MY family and friends fault for not TELLING the Target cashier to take an item off when purchased and NOT Target's error. Well, after this ordeal I wrote a very long and detailed letter to Target's CEO, Chairman of the Board and to a supervisor at Target Headquarters, which I mailed along with my thank you notes to each person who attended my baby shower. I also sent it to everyone on my email contact list and asked them to forward it to everyone they know. Isn't it funny, that after all these people read it, everyone I talked to that purchased a gift for me at Target said they are SURE they told the cashier to take it off. I found out that two different guests actually puchased the same item online - STRAIGHT FROM MY REGISTRY. That item should have been taken off automatically when the FIRST person bought it, but WAS NOT. By the way, there were a few items left that were never purchased at all. Only because I had received a bunch of gift cards - I will NEVER shop at Target again after the gift cards are used up - I myself went to Target to purchase some remaining items. I told the cashier to take it off the registry and she had no idea how. She had to ask someone for help. When I got home the first thing I did was to go online and check to see if they were taken off and guess what????? - strange, but there was ONE item that was purchased and NOT taken off the registry. HMMM, I wonder who is at fault. I also purchased three remaining items (with gift cards of course) that were ONLY available online, DIRECTLY FROM MY OWN REGISTRY and guess what?????? - strange again, but two of the three were taken off and one was not. It's also funny how I also had registries at Babies R Us and I only got ONE duplicate item.
Just so you're aware Qwerty777, during one of my visits to the Target customer service desk to try and straighten this problem out, a supervisor who I must say was very nice, told my husband and I that there are many kinks and flaws in the registry system and this problem occurs frequently. So YOU need to stop blaming customers for this problem. With a system so full of "kinks", Target should not hold such strict policies for returns or exchanges.
I should print and show this to all my family and friends so that they understand what Target employees think of them. I guess you think that only the smart people shopped at Babies R Us and told them to take items off the registry but my family and friends that bought things at Target were the stupid ones who didn't tell the cashier to take it off.
Maybe you should read my original complaint again and get your facts straight before you assume and blame the customers. Target's registry and policies are atrocious and you should be ashamed of yourself for writing the rebuttal you wrote.

Stop blaming Target for your problems

I wish people would stop blaming Target when they are the ones who don't know the registry process and refuse to take any responsibility. First off, the reason you got duplicates was most likely not because of the system---it was because none of your guests could figure out that they are supposed to hand the registry to the cashier to scan, which will automatically log all of the items that they bought that are on the registry.
Second, when they do this, a gift receipt is automatically requested and prints out. And third, while it may be somewhat rude to ask for receipts after the fact, I hardly feel that any of your guests would expect you to keep items you obviously got duplicates of. At my cousins party, she received three of the exact same changing table that were on a registry at some other store. She got receipts from all three so that none of them knew which two were returned, and none had hard feelings, because it was obvious that she liked it, just had no need for the two. And while I may not completely agree with the fact that many honest people are SOL on their returns because of too many people using it to their advantage, it is hardly Target's fault that people can't figure out the registries---the rules are on the sheets they print out.
