I purchased (3) Oil of Olay Regenerist face lotions from Target. At $18.98 each, I consider these items to be high-priced.  As a mother of two (2), my budget is tight!  As a consumer, my expectations are high; for example, if Olay ads promise that this $20 item works just as good if not better than the comparable items sold at department stores for over $190, that's what I expect.  I purchased these items using a Mftr COUPON of BUY 2 GET 1 FREE.  I went home and tried the products. Although I was disappointed in all three (3), there was 1 item, the Eye Roller, that I hated.  On my next trip to Target, I took it back to the store. I had my receipt, I had the item, I was within the 90 day time limit; it seemed like a simple, straight forward return. Unfortunately, the customer service rep. had a different opinion.  She said that "since[I] bought the item with a coupon, I had to return ALL 3 items or she wouldn't be able to return any at all."  I asked if I could exchange it and she said "there was nothing else I could do." I told her that was ludacris and asked to speak to a supervisor or manager - then she said, "I am  the manager!"   The following day, I returned to Target with ALL 3 Items.  She gave me my money back for 2 of the 3 items and said, "you got the third item FREE, if I give you store credit for it or cash back - it's COUPON FRAUD." I was in shock.  Wait so I get nothing?  I explained that since Target was still getting paid for the "free" item (by Oil of Olay) they should treat this item as a "regular" item.

The worst part:  I returned 3 items & my "return" receipt showed 2 items being returned.  I asked her to scan in all 3 items so an employee wouldn't be the benefactor of the coupon I no longer had, she refused.   Her explanation was "if I scan it, the register is going to say I owe you more than I really do.  Finally, she returned it and the register said I was owed $20.60.  She typed in her special codes and the amount went from -$20.60 to -$0.00.  I was so frustrated and I asked why the cash register's view of Targets return policy didn't match HER policy.  And she had the nerve to say that the system needed to be updated!  I asked for the money that I paid in taxes and she said, "there aren't any taxes paid on free items."  That comment was the final straw!  I couldn't believe that someone with the authority to override the register didn't know that customers DO pay taxes on "FREE" items!  As far as I know, they short changed me on the cash I paid to cover tax on the purchase of this "free" item.  And since Oil of Olay PAID Target so that I could have the item, they have an item that belongs to me - which is like stealing.  The bad attitude and eye rolls were just the icing on the cake for this store experience.

You wasted Target employees time, as well as ours.

AUTHOR: It''s a shame - (United States of America)

First of all, in the title of your "report" you have lead us to believe that Target has ripped you off.

How so? You've failed to back-up any of your accusations and complaints with facts. All you have done, in fact, is make yourself look pretty ridiculous. Did you think we'd all sympathize for you: Poor you - you didn't get $60 back for the $40 you spent on the items you returned. Weird. Is this how you pad your "tight" budget - by ripping off companies and wasting the time of the employees and the honest customers that had to wait in line behind you while you threw your unrealistic tantrum?

Secondly, when did it become Target's fault that a product that they carry in their stores (but they do not manufacture) failed to make you happy? Yes, Target has a RIDICULOUS return policy - because of people like you...those who take advantage and find loopholes to rip the companies off. Those companies then turn around and charge US (the innocent consumers) more money. If you're so unhappy with a product of Olay - write to Olay. Call the company. Send an email. They are the ones responsible for their product.

And Target - with their "unreasonable" return policy - STILL allows YOU, THEIR customer - 90 days to make your return. 90 days - that's 3 months. Yeah, their policies are absurd.

Thirdly, unless you work for Target and/or Olay and have actually processed coupons in exchange for money for the company (or companies), you probably are best not to assume things. My educated guess tells me Target doesn't receive full credit for a free item from a coupon. I *do* know for a fact that they only receive a VERY small amount of money from the company that produced an item returned to a Target store for credit. So, for those 3 items you returned at approximately $20/each (value), Target will receive $0 - MAYBE $5. I would know, as I worked there as a manager for 6 1/2 years.

Lastly, you *DID NOT* pay sales tax on an item you received for free. You need to educate yourself if you honestly believe you did.

Wisen up and stop scamming stores. You are only doing yourself harm by creating higher prices everywhere you shop, and further tightening that budget of yours. I sure hope you aren't passing your "shopping ways" to your two children - and shame on you if they witnessed any of this.

Hilarious and Pathetic

First of all, you purchased a $19 lotion and you didn't like it - it didn't turn you into Taylor Swift?   You put it through a centrifuge and didn't like the chemical composition? Ok, enough.  I would love to have sympathy for the OP, the consumer here, but the opiners are on the mark.

You can only get back what you paid!  If you try to return a "free" item for money or credit, that is Return Fraud. Target had every right to ask you to bring back all three items.  Why are you making a federal case out of this?  You put this out to the public and now are making a fool of yourself.  Do Target a favor and shop at K-Mart.

Same Logic

AUTHOR: Cory - (U.S.A.)

The OP has the same logic as someone who buys an item with a rebate, returns the item AND wants to keep the rebate. FRAUD. That's why all rebates require the original receipt and most companies don't allow returns without them.

Where to begin...

AUTHOR: Chris - (USA)

POSTED: Thursday, November 18, 2010

First, if your budget is as tight as you say then why are you buying $19 bottles of face lotion? That sounds like an expensive luxury purchase to me.

Target has nothing to do with Oil of Olay ads.  They are not responsible for "promises" made during commercials.

You are lucky Target gave you any kind of refund at all.  Used make up is typically non-refundable.  Not everything you buy is on a trail basis and can be returned if you are not satisfied.  Most other stores would not have accepted the return.

So you buy 2 items and get one free.  Then you return just one of those items and expect to get full shelf price back?  With that logic, couldn't you take each of them back one at a time and get $60 after only paying $40?  The cashier is right in calling that "coupon fraud" because that is what you were trying to do, whether you were aware of it or not.  You bought something at a certain price and wanted a refund that was more than what you paid for it.  Fraud.  Your actions are a prime example of why return policies have become so strict.

The end result is that you threw a fit at a cashier who was only doing her job by preventing you from commiting fraud.  She probably deals with customers like you who want something for nothing all the time.  Do the employees who work there a favor and don't go back.  You sound like a customer that ruins everyone's day by throwing fits and arguing with everyone who doesn't give you your way.  Better yet, do everyone a favor and get someone else to do your shopping.

Coupons

AUTHOR: JAFO - (USA)

POSTED: Friday, November 12, 2010

That is the way the Buy 1, Get 1 Free coupons work.  You should not have been charged sales tax for the item that was free.  Most stores charge sales tax on the amount AFTER coupons.  I believe this may vary slightly by state.  Should have been easy enough to do the math.  If you paid NOTHING for it, you get NOTHING back if you return it.  As long as you were fully reimbursed for the 2 you paid for, Target owes you nothing.

The fact Target will get paid by the manufacturer for the item is irrelevant to you.  Given that someone somewhere probably managed to bully a rep into giving them the money they did not deserve back, it's pretty much a wash.

What the first rep told you was wrong.  You should be able to return any of the items as long as all 3 were itemized on your initial receipt.  You still would not gave gotten any money for it.  Might as well have just retained it.  Target does not have anything that belongs to you, you returned something to them so your ownership ceases.

Who is stealing from who?

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, November 12, 2010

If I read this report right you bought 3 Items at about $20 a piece.  You had a coupon for Buy 2 - Get 1 Free, so you ended up paying only about $40.

You wanted to return one of the items.  Once you return it, you no longer "bought" two, you only bought one and got the 1 free.  So you are no longer in compliance with the coupon.  There are times when I have seen stores "prorate" a return based on what you returned vs. the free offer.  However, since this was a mfg coupon those are probably under different "rules" and that may have been the only thing they could have done.  So you would have had the same thing happen with any store.

As for when you did return all 3 items.  You only paid $40 so when you returned 3 items they will return 2 at the $20 each, and the third items since that was the FREE item you paid 0.00.  So if the amount you got back matches the amount you paid then they are correct, and you were wrong in trying to get $60 when you only paid $40.

Now, as for the taxes.  If you can show that you did pay taxes on it then yes you would be entitled to receive that back as well.

I don't understand..

AUTHOR: Ronny g - (USA)

POSTED: Friday, November 12, 2010

If ANYTHING in this report described a way Target ripped you off, I would support you. But it seems you are not happy that you didn't get something for free..and you were disappointed (your words) with the items anyhow. They told you the returm policy..and they let you return the items..did you expect to profit from this? What is the difference who oil of olay pays for anything..Target is the one selling it and stocking it and shelving it and paying the electric bills in the store and salaries and advertising, not you.

Now it may not be my place to offer you financial advice..but YOU are the one who stated you are a mother of two and on a tight budget. Don't you think you owe it to your family to make due without $19.00 face lotions?

I guess Target should apologize to you for not letting you keep an item for free..that you didn't like anyhow? The employees are having a good laugh about this one when sharing customer issue stories I am sure...
