I work for a temp agency, and they deposited a check into my TCF account for 436.00. TCF stole my entire check, supposedly to cover a large overdraft. I did overdraw, but when I checked my account, it showed as being overdrawn around -100.00. The fact that they took my entire check, and that I am still overdrawn by 251.00, would mean that I was six hundred and some dollars in the hole, but that amount never showed up on my balance inquiry. The other issue is that they continued to approve my purchases despite the fact that I had no money in my account. This is outright dishonesty and legalized stealing. Each time I checked my balance, the overdraft amount was different. First it was -98.00, then it was -100.00. Not once did I see a balance for -600 and something at any time. Yet they took my check to cover this balance I never saw.

Once I bring this account to a 0.00 balance, I will close it for good. TCF will no longer get my business.

NSF Notices

AUTHOR: Pam - ()

POSTED: Monday, July 22, 2013

I received another NSF Statement from TCF. This one showed that I am negative -305.00. The ones before that showed 253.00 and 198.00. I am assuming that these amounts are up to date. That brings me back to the original question. If my most recent negative balance was -305.00, then the 436.00 check should have covered it completely and leave me with a small balance. I had a PO Box back in March but it was closed due to a lack of funds to renew it. I have my mail coming to my home address now. I told TCF that I had never received a statement showing that I was so far in the hole they had to take my final check to cover it. I was told they mailed out the statement to my PO Box in June. I didn't have my PO Box in June,  plus all their other statements have been coming to my home address since April, so I see no reason why I would not have received the statement showing a huge negative amount. The other problem is that I can't get on their online banking site. I gave all the right information to set it up, PIN number, account number, SS# etc, yet I still cannot get online. I wonder why that is. I think they took my final check before they updated everything. There is no other explanation. I am getting unemployment, but it is going to my credit union account. No way in hell will it ever go back into my TCF account.

I think it is called overdraft protection plan

If I remember correctly, there is a plan for "debit or check card" called 'Overdraft Protection' which offers you to allow overdraft when you don't have enough money in the account. For some banks, they automatically opt you in to the plan. You need to explicitly opt out by letting them know and confirm it. That is what your TCF account might have.

Speaking of increasing of a negative balance in your account without touching it, it is simply from their charges every month. In other words, once your account is in negative, they may charge for the account balance being negative each month (from what I see so far, every bank charges fees when the account balance has gone negative). As a result, your account balance is going deeper in the hole. Some banks would stop the charge and the account is automatically closeed, but some banks let it go as long as they want it to.

Your problem here is that you rely on balance inquiry which may not be up-to-date as it should be. Your report does not say anything about whether or not you use your card after you knew that you have already overdrawn your account. But it seems to imply that you knew about the negative balance but did not clear/pay off immediately but wait until a certain time has passed. As I mentioned earlier, all banks will charge for the negative balance, but how and when they charge are depended on each bank policies.

Sorry for hearing about your loss. Please remember that every bank may have the same policies. You will need to closely watch what and how you spend money.

MONEY

AUTHOR: Pam - ()

POSTED: Saturday, July 06, 2013

I didn't check my account as closely as I shoud have. However, if a transaction I tried to make had been declined as soon as I tried to make it, I would have been alerted to the fact that there was no money in my account and would not have made any more transactions. My credit union will automatically decline your transaction if you don't have enough money to cover what you are trying to buy. This shows integrity. The credit union obviously cares about not dropping their customers into a hole and then charging them for it. Furthermore, if I really was in the hole for -600.00, it should have shown up on my balance inquiry.

TCF pulled another dirty trick. I had an account that was closed, at least that is what it showed on their website. I noticed a negative balance of 6.00, which I thought was odd, because I didn't take any money out of that account. I assumed at first that I had simploy forgotten to put money in the account. The next month however, it said negative 12.00. I knew something was going on then because I had not touched the account. TCF told me that the account was dormant, not closed. Therefore, they could charge me the service fee. Since it said closed on their website, there was nothing I could do about it.

Is that sneaky trick my fault? I don't think so.

Question

What does your bank statement show???? Online, phone and atm balances are not correct.  Did you manage your check register????? I suspect you did not.  You spent money you did not have so it is not the bank's fault but your own.
