Tru Talent Management seemed to be a legit business run out of Utah. The appearance of the office space is nice, and the employed seemd very niec and were very attractive. It seemed like a genuine modeling/acting agency. I was ushered into an " audition" to be put on with the agency. I was told that very few are chosen and that I had a great look. I read some lines from a script and I sucked really bad but I was told that I had some sort of natural ability and that with some classes I could become really big. During the interview the vice president of the company came in and added that I should be on the modeling side too. I was on cloud nine thinking that I had a chance.
later I find out that the "few" that are chosen are everyone who walks through the door. We are persuaded to sign a contract and pay a deposit then immediately start the classes. I quickly realize that people are still being interviewd daily, and that the classes are filled with people like me, that cant act, that were just pushed through the contract process.
In my case, I was hired with a company that would have me gone out of the country and would interfere with my ability to attend the "classes". Thinking that they would work with me, I called Tru Talent to work out a deal to let me out of my contract since I was unable to attend. They rudely denied my request and asked for me to pay my balance immediately. This is when it was obvious that they were not here to make me an actor, but they just wanted my money. Why should I pay for something that I am not even able to use? I did my research and its called "inability to perform". Unfortunately I have to get a lawyer involved to sort all this out. I would rather pay a lawyer 3k than these thieves!
I refused to pay for classes that I will not and did not attend so now I am being harrassed for 2800 dollars. They added a 50 percent penalty, so my original debt of 1800 went up another thousand dollars. I attended 3 classes and am unable to finish yet they want me to fork up 2800 dollars. They promised me good pictures on there internet site but I have yet to see this webpage they created for me. I asked to have my pictures retaken but was told that my pictures did not matter because it was all in the audition that people get parts.
I was told not to try out for anything until I had completed the classes. I feel lied to, and manipulated. These people do not care about helping you, they just want your money.
The owner of this company sells all their contracts to her father who owns a collection agency. All the "talent" is to these people is a contract. Once you sign your name, another company comes in and buys the contract from Tru to ensure collection. It is obvious that Tru Talent does not make enough money from booking its talent, that they have to charge you to dream just to stay afloat.

Ripoff Report is the second listing in a search for Tru Talent. I just started researching because a friend told me that she is in collections because she walked out on her contract. She states that one of the managers there tried to sleep with her and several other girls, so they all left. Based on a quick search of the company I have no reason not to believe that this company's business practices are highly questionable and immoral at best.
The Better Business Bureau lists 26 complaints in the last 3 years. Tru Talent Management has been given an "F" rating by the Better Business Bureau.

Tru Talent Management Isn't a Scam

Tru Talent Management IS a legit business run out of Utah. They're filed with the Better Business Bureau and when I researched them before joining, it turns out that the BBB has had only one legitimate complaint about Tru in the last three years.
It's important to keep in mind that Tru Talent Management is a NEW talent agency. Not only is it a new talent agency, it's also an agency that is not in Los Angeles or New York. They don't have all the connections that a well-established agency in Los Angeles or New York might have, but plenty of talent agents from established agencies do come to Utah to pool Tru's talent. In June, Tru's going to be holding auditions to take 20 members from their Salt Lake and Las Vegas to basically tour different agencies in LA and New York. And believe me: those twenty people are NOT going to be "whoever walks in the door."
The reason it seems like they take everybody who walks in the door is because they very nearly do. Believe it or not, acting is not some mysterious and exclusive thing. Anybody, pretty much, can do it with a little training, because all it is is feeling something. When you're honest to what you feel, other people can see it on you. And show biz? It's all about looks. Not good looks. Just looks. If you look a certain way, you're going to get cast for looking that way. That's just how the cookie crumbles.
As for the classes... I'd never acted for a camera before in my life, but now I feel more comfortable doing that than I do acting on stage. It also feels like I've actually learned how to ACT and not just pretend I'm acting. Despite how you may feel about the way the business is run, those classes truly are a godsend. Rob Diamond is an excellent coach and he provides some very vital feedback while still being encouraging. And as for his credentials... well, Rob Diamond is a local film-maker who is well-acquainted with Jeff Johnson, Utah's most prominent casting director.
I do acknowledge that I think that the $2000 fee is a tad... heart-breaking, to say the least. However, Tru Talent Management is, like any other agency, a BUSINESS first and foremost. And right now, they're not a very big business and not very many people have heard of them, and so they can't make a lot of money off of what their actors and models accomplish in local and independent films. I'd like to not pay them $2000, but I would like them to actually have the financial reach to put me somewhere.
To conclude, Tru has already gotten me work and plenty of exposure, which is all a talent agency is supposed to do. As far as I'm concerned, they're doing what any small, up-and-coming agency would have to do to eventually catch up to other agencies in the business, and I'm behind them all the way.
