I booked a flight months in advance from Manchester, NH to Portland, OR on United Airlines. The day of the flight, I got a text saying my flight from Manchester was delayed by 1 1/2 hours, making me miss my connection in Chicago. When I called to reschedule, they said they'd already rebooked me on a flight out of Chicago which requires me to wait almost 5 hours at O'hare! Then to add insult to injury, they reassigned my seat to a middle seat at the back of the plane, unless of course, I wanted to pay the $62 fee to upgrade my seat assignment! No compensation was offered. No options to rebook on a different airline. Nothing but a "sorry" from the service agent. I book my flights well in advance to make sure I get a good seat and don't have any problems. Then, the day of the flight United does this. I'm very unhappy with their service. The service agent was very nice, however. It's not her fault and she did everything they allowed her to do.
I wouldn't recommend this airline to anyone.

#1 Consumer Suggestion
Airline COC

You first need to know the reason for the delay. If it was for weather or air traffic control reasons you are out of luck. If it was for mechanical reasons that is a different issue. Unfortunately, when you purchase an airline ticket these days you are subject to the their Contract of Carriage (COC). This contract permits the airlines to operate with many legal protections all in their favor of course. Essentially, the only obligation an airline has is to get you from point A to point B. It doesn't matter how long it takes or what seat you fly in.
This especially true when delays and re-routing are due to weather. The only remedy you have is instances of IDB (Involuntary denied boarding). This occurs when you are bumped from a flight for non-weather related issues, such as overbooking. Then the airline has to pay cash compensation based on how long it took to get you to your final destination and if stuck overnight then it has to pay for your meals and lodging. However, in your case if the delay was due to weather (I am assuming that it was) then there is not much that can be done.
