I am a wounded warrior in the United States Army.  Facing a medical discharge I decided I would try to use this time to prepare for a new chapter in my life.  I started attending the University of Phoenix.

They offered those of us stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas a discount.  Being a Reservist they were using copies of my orders to prove my Active Duty status and me still being a part of the Warrior Transition Battalion here.

I recently started a class, and in the first week of class I receive an email asking for another copy of my ERB.  So I sent in a copy of my new extension orders as I have numerous times prior to this without any problem.  My financial aide advisor emails me back saying they "may not accept" my orders as "they are unfamiliar with such a document."  Shocked I emailed back saying your joking right?  It is the same thing I have been using the entire year attending the university.

Not knowing what I was going to be charged for the class, I told her I was going to stay out of the classroom until they made their decision.  Thinking it was going to only be a day or two.  A week later after numerous attempts to contact her, my academic advisor, the financial aide supervisor, and the office of dispute management with no replies from anyone!!!!  I am notified they will accept my orders.

With the class half over it would be futile to attempt to salvage any type of grade.  I received a W from the university.  No attempts were made to offer any type of compensation, assistance or anything.  Phoenix held on to my Tuition Assistance, not releasing it back to the Army and I now have to repay the money to the government that they basically stole by committing fraud and using deceptive business practices.

The whole reason I did not attend this class was because they could not, or maybe I should change that to would not tell me what they were going to charge me, after I had already started the class. I have enough other issues going on in my life currently with my medical discharge looming and the stress of dealing with that.

Numerous attempts have been made to deal with them with little to no help.  They keep pushing it back to the military.  All they would need to do release the funds back to the military because of their practices.   Being a for profit university they obviously are not doing that.

I understand their is little to nothing I can do about this besides pay the government back the money that was stolen from them by the University of Phoenix and drive on.  I do want to do everything I can however to let my fellow military Reservists and National Guard members the deceptive practices used by this institution to hopefully help them from facing the same fate I did.

You have a few other options as well.  Please report them to the post IG and the Education Services Officer.  With enough complaints, they may be able to stop these for-profit schools from taking advanage of servicemembers and their families. The ESO has a LOT of power and has major decision-making influence over what schools can operate on a military installation.

Also post your experiences on military.com forums, and other military websites.

God bless you, and thank you for your service.  I hope that whatever illness/injury qualifies you for WW status is resolved soon.
