Hello everyone, I hope you've come here first to understand the huge scam University of Phoenix is impressing upon people. I don't need to go through all the details, but you can just google "University of Phoenix scam" and you'll find plenty of information. In short, this school is worthless. I started with the online program and began the classes for an MBA program (5 week classes). They weren't professional; they were easy A's and I learned very little (especially considering it was graduate school level). Also according to numerous references by employers, the degree "earned" at the University of Phoenix is virtually worthless. In fact, it's less than worthless: many employers will think less of you for having one. Don't waste your money here.

First of all I would like to confess that I am humiliated. I have already graduated from my undergraduate studies and wanted to pursue my MBA. My family situation isn't great so I had to do an online program so I could care for my parents (who are elderly and sick)--that's why I chose UoP. The setup process was easy, they're BARELY CARED about my qualifications prior to entering the school. I never had to take a GRE, and I even began classes before they saw any proof of my undergraduate or high school certification. They really were just amped to get me enrolled and paid for. The reason I am humiliated is because I was too ignorant to do my research before I started. As I mentioned before, all I had to do was bring up on google a couple of articles about the corruption in UoP and I could have easily dodged that bullet.

Please if any one reading this has had this similar experience I need your help. Here's my current situation: I started the course and took the government loans, and after maybe 4 weeks discovered all the issues about the school (while at the same time noticing how pointless the class instruction and assignments were). Around week 4 I called my counselor and told him I wanted out as well as went on the website and hit the "official withdrawal" button. Luckily I was able to get out before my loan could be processed and I won't have to pay that back...but here's the problem: they still want around $1400 for the 4 weeks I was in that first joke of a class. As I said, the loan didn't go through so I'm not dealing with the government here, but UoP still demands I pay the $1400. What do I do? I don't have any legal knowledge, and I certainly can't afford to pay a lawyer (although I believe I have some legal ground for a lawsuit). I don't have $1400 to pay them, especially since I don't have the loan. I considered refusing to pay the fee, but I think they would probably come after my credit score or something like that. Please help me, how do I avoid this fraud? I'm really at my wit's end here.

To the OP: you are out of luck regarding the money you owe UofP. It's a legitimate debt. Despite what "iwantohelp" says, most schools DO charge for your attendance (regardless how little) if you don't officially withdraw before a certain date.  If you were there 4 weeks into a 5 week term you attended 80% of the course and owe the money.

Don't ignore them, because they'll send you to collections and ruin your credit.  Just arrange a payment that you can handle and be glad you got out when you did. You don't have any basis for a lawsuit.

And to those who read the reply from "iwantohelp" be advised that JIU is under notice from their accreditor:

"On June 23-24, 2011, the Higher Learning Commission continued the accreditation of Jones
International University but placed it on Notice, which indicates that the institution is pursuing a
course of action that, if continued, could lead it to be out of compliance with one or more of the
Criteria for Accreditation and Core Components."

Some things to think about

I work for another school and always hear the horror stories after it is to lte. Some schools will not charge you a penny untill you have been in class a certain amount of time. if any school ask's for a enrollment fee, or a admission fee or a applacation fee beware as you are nothing but a number and $ sign to them. if you have done any research you will see that U of P is under investigation for fraud ( not telling you the whole story) and as a open enrollment school they can and will enroll anyone who can qualify for financial aid. On line education is a good thing if you know where to look and what for. try to find a private online school ( they do esxsist) as they are looking for students who need a good quality education and you have a better chance at a better education. I left U of P and found a school called Jones international University and found they are one of the top online schools in the contry and in the world. I wish you the best of luck.
