What happened is back in December a website charged me multiple times instead of once which was a mistake however it caused my checking account to overdraw and my autobills came out as normal generating a large amount of USAA $29 NSF fees. I have called multiple times trying to resolve this because the fees themselves caused the account to stay in the red, the customer service reps refused to refund any more than 2 of them stating that it's a "courtesy" even though it still adds up to over $400.

The total of the fees was $464 which is asenine and it wasn't my fault, one of the reps even gave me poor financial advice after speaking to me like a child telling me to apply for a different credit card for overdraft protection which I did and it caused my credit score to drop, the one I have is secured and has a low limit but it has been perfectly sufficient until now, another rep told me I should stop transferring money into my acorns savings app in order to avoid more of their fees. The problem was not the transferring of money to that app, the problem was that $400 was missing from my account.

I asked how they can justify taking $400 from me over a mistake and they just repeated in their robot voice "there's nothing we can do", even though we all know if I was a more "preferred" or wealthy customer any issue would be addressed and fixed immediately. I make enough money to cover my bills and I send a small amount to savings, they wiped out my paycheck and I had to take an emergency $500 loan out to even out the account so they would stop charging me. They have completely taken advantage of me, $400 is greedy and excessive. Also after the way they talked to me and their "suggestions" about what I should do, I feel discriminated against for my financial status, it's my choice to so what I do for a living even though it won't get me rich, it makes me happy and it affords me what I need, it does NOT afford me to pay USAA's frivolous fees for nothing.

USAA was following their written policy and there was no mistake on USAA's oart.  There were attempts made on your account to withdraw funds and those attempts caused your account to be overdrawn.   Per their policy you are charged overdraft fees on the overdrawn transactions. There is no distinction as to if it was a mistake or not. Now, there was a time when banks would refund fees by mistakes by other companies..but that has long since gone away and it is a rarity if this happens now.   The two overdrafts they refunded as a "courtesy" is about standard among banks.

The real company you need to be upset at is the merchant who charged your card by mistake.  Where if you get right down to it they are the ones responsible for "making you whole" by paying all of the fees that were caused by their mistake.   You may get lucky if you talked to them and they agree to credit you.  However, if they are like many companies they will tell you to go "pound sand" and say that they owe you nothing for their mistake.  The reason they do this is even though they are basically responsible, they know for the most part it would cost you more to try and fight them in court than you lost in fees.

You may want to continue to tackle it with both companies, and eventually you may get one or both to agree to some sort of credits.

Good Luck
