The offer was for us to sit as a couple for a 1-hour non-time-share presentation regarding wholesale travel. For our time we would receive round-trip airfare for 2 good to the continental USA and a 5-peice luggage set.

The presentation was low-pressure and pleasant for the most part. We actually wanted to buy the service. The only problems occurred upon arriving and upon leaving, and upon receiving (or not) the incentives. Even though they say it is not a time-share presentation, it is essentially a time-share kind of thing. You pay a fee, like $4000, to own a share of the wholesale travel club. Then you buy vacations from their catalog at "discount" prices. All they show in the presentation and brochure is a few examples of the best prices that people have obtained before.

Upon arriving:
They pushed a contract in front of our face that said a bunch of stuff like they can chance or cancel the incentives at any time without notice; they can change the dates of our air flight, they can change the destination if needed. They demanded that we tell them our income, which had not been disclosed on the telephone, either. By signing the contract, we were obligated to a bunch of details not disclosed on the telephone, such as bring the original letter we received (we had not), send a "small" fee to secure the reservation. It had a statement that they would have no obligation if we failed to honor our side of the contract in any way (I took that to mean not having the paper, not paying the fee, not having the income stated, etc.)

Upon leaving:
We liked the service and had the money to buy it. However, there was one major problem: The sales presentation turned high-pressure really fast. Upon asking for documentation that would prove the value of the service, they said everything was already in their presentation and the brochure. But all that said is that we would save money. It had nothing we could do due diligence on to determine an actual value for the product. Then, the manager came over and got mean, saying we were jerking them around with our questions.

Upon receiving (or not) the incentives:
They brought our 5 peice luggage set and a coupon for round-trip travel and dismissed us. I had expected a really cheap luggage set with one fitting inside the other with wheels and handles. You could pay $200 or $20 for one of these sets, and I expected the $20 set. But what they actually gave was shocking. All 5 peices were contained in a flat plastic bag, about 2 cm thick. The material the luggage was made out of was thinner than the plastic bag. I think it would be about $3 at a swap meet or a dollar store.

For the round-trip airfare, I expected the usual restrictions: reserve 60-days in advance, open flights only, that kind of stuff. But it was a lot weirder than that. It said we had to use an exact-sized envelope (an uncommon size like 5 inches by 7 inches). If we failed to follow any of our "agreements" (such as using the right size envelope) then we would not be entitled to the certificate. We had to register for the certificate first, receive it in the mail, and then when we got it, call for a reservation between certain dates and give our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd preferences for destinations and dates. We had to pay some kind of fee to hold the reservation. We did send the right-sized envelope, and we did get the certificate, but we ended up letting it expire unused due to the complicated restrictions.
