My wife used to have a home business doing recruiting and she got a Vonage business line because of the price. We installed and it started off fine enough, but the first router had a defect so we had to swap it but the call quality didn't improve. Lots of echos and pauses, which is unprofessional when you are representing another company on the phone. Most of the time when we'd call tech support we'd get someone who barely spoke English or had such a thick accent we couldn't understand them. They kept telling us that Vonage wasn't meant for heavy use. WHY THE HELL DO YOU OFFER BUSINESS SERVICE IF THE SYSTEM ISN'T MEANT FOR HEAVY USE????? We eventually canceled and went back to SBC. I'm not sure we ever got all our money back but I still have a router that I paid $99 for and I'm not even going to get half that when I sell it on eBay.
What really stinks is my father in law has Vonage and he's never had a problem. Apparently it's a shot in the dark with these guys.

Hi Todd. While I don't use Vonage, I do use one of the other VOIP companies and they all work basically the same. Lingo sent me the equipment and while I could hear others great, they couldn't hear me a lot of the time. This sounds similar to what you had happen.
It had nothing to do with the VOIP service and everything to do with my cable modem. I still had an older one and it wasn't able to handle the increased bandwidth the cable companies have given to their customers over the past year and that is required for good VOIP calls.
As soon as we purchased a new modem the phone problems totally disappeared and the sound quality in and out going is great. No more packet loss and both internet and phone work much better. I can call anywhere in the USA, Canada or Western Europe for 22 bucks a month. Can't beat that price!
I'm thinking that could be what is behind the problems you had when you tried VOIP. I'm not saying Vonage is a good company, I've read too much on them here on ROR, but your case I think will go back to a modem that is too old and not the VOIP service itself.
It's probably too late for you to get this information, as it seems you have gone on to another company for your land line. Maybe this info will help someone else though that just got their VOIP service, if they encounter the same problems.
While it seems Lingo and Cox Cable knew what I needed to fix the problems I encountered at first, judging by all the posts here about Vonage, they are not telling their customers how to fix the problems by renting or buying a new modem. This oversight is giving them a very bad name in the business and I'd never consider using them.
