I have been a customer of Wachovia for about 5 years, I joined them at a college orientation. I am still a busy, working college student yet I am very up to date with my banking information. I keep track of my finances by phone, online banking, and retaining every single receipt. Before I make any purchases, I make sure I have more than triple those funds in my bank.

Last month I had talked to a representative of an internet company about my billing and i requested her to deduct money from another account and to remove my personal checking account off of their auto-billing list. She removed it and repeated all information to me and that was that.

Sunday, a charge of 60.68 (unauthorized charge from that company) was on hold and then it was posted on the following Monday (It left my balance at 65.39). I called in to speak with a representative and they apologized and said they were reversing/refunding that payment back to my checking account.

As for my complaint with Wachovia, My balance was 65.39 and then 4 purchases (15.00,10.00,7.41,3.04) were taken out of that total leaving me at 29.94. Then I see an overdraft fee of 175.00 and then a post of 136.00 cash deposit and then I see since that 175.00 still leaves me overdrafted (after several hours) I get hit with another 105.00 in overdraft fees, altogether 280.00 in overdraft fees. This seems ridiculous. I have never in my 5 years encountered these outrageous fees. I mean if I am at fault please explain to me where.

The customer service representative I spoke to today said that it was the 60.68 Charge which was the initial overdraft but I remember that day it was posted to my account and everything was alright with my account. I even printed the screen out and have it saved. That 60.68 was an unauthorized automatic charge which is being refunded back to me so I'm trying to see if common sense can come into play here with my situation.

I want my bank to protect me and understand me as to remove these ridiculous fees after listening to my situation. The representative on the phone said she would refund my money and then after being on hold for 5 minutes she came back on the phone to say she apologized but she could not do anything for me as far as this situation went.

I am trying to contact Robert K Steel the CEO of Wachovia but I have had no such luck in finding where I can contact him or anyone who can look into changing the way these overdrafts work. Currently I see BOfA is taking care of their overdraft situation starting July 1 and I do hope Wachovia will consider making these changes on overdraft fees. Although I am a bit terrified and can't sleep seeing a negative 183.00 in my account, I still have a bit of faith in Wachovia to reimburse me 100% of my unnecessary fees. I hope someone from Wachovia will understand computers don't hold common sense, humans do.

Regards to all who have experienced similar outrageous fees from Wachovia.

Progress on BofA ^

Wrong Company..

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, March 11, 2010

Your problem is with the Internet company who made the mistake in taking out the funds from your account.  They are the one who are responsible for the OD fees that THEY caused.  THEY are the ones you need to go to to get them to reimburse you.

Yes many years ago the bank MAY have refunded the fees.  But there was so much fraud by customers(not that I am saying you are doing that) that just about every bank has taken the stand that unless it is the bank's error they will not refund the fees.

And just a side note as to your managing of your account.  You mention phone, on-line banking, and keeping every single receipt.  Those are good, but it is not complete.  No where do you mention you keep a written register.  Everytime you make a transaction you need to write it down in your register.  This actually will make your bookkeeping a lot simpler.  As you will not have to keep looking at your on-line balance and then trying to match up that with your receipts that have not been posted yet.  Without a register you have been lucky so far and a register would not have helped you in this case.  But there will be a time where the lack of a register will come back and cause you problems.  Then that time it will be your fault.
