A word of warning to consumers. AVOID the Walmart in Bryan, Ohio. This has got to be the most poorly run retail store I have ever seen. They put used and defective merchandise back out on the floor and resell it. I have personally purchased 2 such items. A carpet steamer, which was filthy, had dirty water in it, and was missing a part. And an iron, which had something which looked strangely like a red pen cap melted all over the sole plate. Their clothing is second rate, at best. The only time I ever got help in the paint department that was polite and prompt, I discovered it was the paint rep just there filling his sample chips. He didn't even work for Walmart! The employees and management alike are rude and disrespectful.

On one occasion, I had need to call for a manager to the service desk. Upon my simple tossing of a gift card and reciept on the counter, she rudely snorted "DON'T throw things at me!" When I told her if she wanted to speak to me as though I were the person who was in the wrong rather than the cashier who had ignored me and caused the entire problem, then she could refund my entire purchase and I'd go across the street to the competition she became stiffly polite. I had a sneaking suspicion that she simply didn't want to have to explain why they had 5 gallons of tinted paint returned 2 minutes after it was purchased.

On my final jaunt into this store, the cashier was notably rude. Their system declined my check. I simply stated" there's no reason it should have done that". She then literally slapped 2 slips of paper on the counter and snapped "Your check was declined. It doesn't tell me why!"

Well, obviously. That's for my privacy and protection. However, it would not have been difficult to simply be polite. "I'm sorry, but the system has declined this check for some reason. Here's a number you can call to inquire about the problem. (enter slips of paper). Do you have another form of payment?" Apparently this was too difficult a concept for this woman to grasp.

Unfortunately, having come in with a splitting migrane and finding that the store was out of the item I went for in the first place I was already in a bad mood. Her rude and disrespectful attitude toward me, the customer, was the last straw. I was PO'd, so I said "I am never shopping here again. I'm tired of all the crap." and she VERY rudely spat "FINE!"

OK, now I work for a fairly large company in the service industry and should we encounter an employee who even comes HALF as close to being this obviously rude to a customer, they find themselves unemployed by the end of their shift. I've witnessed people fired for shutting a window/door in a customer's face. I have had enough. I had paid for my items with a charge card, I had two more as a separate purchase. I have a migraine, this rude, unhappy woman is the proverbial straw that broke the camels back. I pointed at her and ground out through my clenched teeth, "DON"T YOU TALK TO ME THAT WAY!" then pointed at my 2 item and simply said "Ring it up!" At this point she deserts her register and goes running for management.

OK, she's rude and disrespectful to the point that she has ticked off the customer and caused a scene at her checkout lane...now she's running away to get management. I assume to 'escort' the customer she pissed off from the building? Excuse me?! I had every right to be angry and told them that as I took a look at her name tag, assured her that she'd be reported for her attitude, and told the two rude managers not to worry. I was leaving and NEVER setting foot in there again. I'd rather pay a few dollars extra to avoid being abused and mistreated by WalMart employees.

it takes less effort to smile than it does to make a frown.

I did save my inane writing comments for that person. Now you have read them. You never did write back and let us know if it was a shrimp ring or not. I was just trying to picture and understand how big pieces of ice could get on and be on the shrimp and not seen. No matter. You are an angry person and most likely always will be. You have that luxury. Angry people are easy to pick them out in public. They wake up angry, live the day angry, and go to sleep angry. Most CSR'S do everything they can to just give quick service and hope that person goes on their way. Oh well., as I wrote earlier, good luck. I am much more concerned about having a good movement later on that exchanging words of wit with you. Good luck to you and all those around you.

You don't read very thoroughly, do you?? I clearly stated that the cashier slapped the slips of paper on the counter and spoke to me rudely. VERY RUDELY. I HAVE been in her place and there is simply NO EXCUSE for this type of behavior. As for the manager and the gift card...when YOU go to the service desk somewhere...do you place your item you are returning in the hands of the person behind the desk...or do you plunk it down on the counter? I have never seen anyone EVER hand the item being returned to the person behind the desk. Before you go mouthing off on that one...I also worked at customer service, so you can save your inane comments for someone stupid. As for the store manager avoiding me....I don't even KNOW the store manager. I have never met with or spoken to the store manager. I wouldn't even have known it WAS the store manager if not for his giant photograph having been posted at the service desk. As for the cashier and her attitude, I related this story to a friend and she described the cashier to me EXACTLY. When I said, yes that was the one, she told me "That woman comes through where I work all the time and she's a real B***H!" So Edward, go leave your idiotic comments where you have a leg to stand on for some illiterate fool!

Time to vent the anger

Maybe they do things differently in your area. I have used their deli trays in at least 6 different parts of the country. Every shrimp ring tray that I have bought, has been served that same way from each different location. They are served on a formed plastic holding tray and covered with a clear plastic
snap on top . All of the shrimp are deveined and lined up neatly on the tray in circles. Everything is very visible through the clear plastic lid. Maybe they just throw them in a closed box in your area. Maybe you got shrimp that was still shelled and not deveined . I have only seen the deli sell shrimp rings. I do not know if they get them from a vendor already prepared or if they make the trays.

Even cooked shrimp needs to be frozen after a couple of days or they will go bad. Had I been given a shrimp tray where the shrimp was just put in as a frozen cluster, I would not have accepted it. Every tray that I have gotten has been frozen but will defrost within an hour after opening the lid. Maybe I have just been lucky.

I am able to save 15% to 25% by shopping a chain stores. That is more money for my pocket. I do try to look for the best quality in the selection. It is the same everywhere. Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart, Target, AutoZone, Best Buy. Advance Auto, Circuit City and every other big box chain store, they have bigger buying power and therefore can sell it for less than a mom and pop store. That is real life and is not going to change. The same goes for the restaurant and hotel business.

As far as you issue with the cashier. Change places with her for a day. Having been in the same retail business most of my life, I have witnessed both sides. The one thing that is a 99.99% guarantee, is that the customer that tosses (throws) the credit card or money on the counter, will always hold their hand out expecting the cashier to place the change or credit card in it. Even if the customer has not yet put out their hand for the change, a cashier will extend their arm and hold the money and wait for the customer to accept the change. If a cashier tossed the card or change on the counter, there would be a complaint of being rude.

You seem to take issues with anyone you run into at wallyworld, maybe that manager that avoids you has had to deal with you before and does not want too anymore. Who knows? There are some people that can never be pleased in life. I do not know if you are one of them, but I hope things get better for you.

File a Complaint to Corporate

AUTHOR: Phillip - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, August 31, 2007

I had a similar experience in one of the local Wal-Mart stores in my area. Yes, the employees are rude and insulting, but what can you expect from management without any formal training in customer relations and a salary comparable to a convenience store.

I am a business major in college and study the awful practices of Wal-Mart stores. My solution to the 'insulting wanna-be managers' is to complain to the customer service department regarding improper customer relations by employees. This will incite an inquiry to that particular store regarding employee conduct.

In my complaint, I drafted a letter with proof (a receipt from a previous purchase) of the sale that was refused by management in a local store. Details include the vindictive insulting comments by a manager at Wal-Mart. The second part of the letter attacks Wal-Mart policies and the devastating impact upon a community where a super centers is built; I mean the capitalist monopoly created in every town.

To contact Wal-Mart stores:
Call 1-800-WAL-MART (1-800-925-6278)

or write a letter to:

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.
Attn: Customer Service
702 S.W. 8th Street
Bentonville, AR 72716.

*This contact information can be found on the WALMART website by clicking on 'on-line customer service' under help, at the bottom of the page. Scroll down to related links and click on 'Wal-Mart Stores Contact Information.' This will reveal how to contact customer service regarding a retail store.

Everybody that posted information here, thanks for your in-site on Wal-Mart stores.

Thanks

Thanks for the comment. Actually, the $45 went right back on the corporate charge account. The problem with the tray was not simply that there were frozen shrimp, but that we had ordered it a week prior and it was supposed to be thawed when we got it. When we picked it up, the employee was gone FOREVER. When we got to the picnic and opened the tray we discovered the reason she took so long. The shrimp had JUST been taken out of the freezer and dumped on the tray and actually had big chunks of ice in them. They were like little rocks and it took us 30 minutes to thaw them in cold water enough that they could be eaten.

It was a matter of principle and I phoned the store simply to alert the manager that there had been an issue. I figured he'd talk to the deli workers and MAYBE offer us a gift card for $10 or $15 that we could give away at our christmas party. I never expected or asked for a refund and was impressed that it was his solution to the inconvenience we were caused.

A large shrimp tray for free?... your too smooth

AUTHOR: Edward - (U.S.A.)

That store sounds like a good place to shop. Albeit, one would think that shrimp would need to be very cold if taken on a picnic. All seafood can spoil quickly and cause illness. The more chilled the shrimp tray is, the better it tastes. They taste lousy at room temp. Having bought shrimp trays before, I know first hand that they do not take very long to thaw out, especially out doors at a picnic. Even though all of the shrimp was eaten, did you keep the refund or did you give it back to your boss?

Thanks for your advice. Let me clarify that this is the only walmart out of half a dozen I live within shopping fair distance of where I have EVER encountered this unexcusable behavior. While I no longer make personal purchases from any walmart due to product quality, My employer has a corporate charge account with Walmart stores and they do frequently make purchases of office supplies, hardware, and items for employee parties. Unfortunately, since I am in the position that often requires me to be the purchaser of these items, I cannot avoid Walmart entirely.

However, I WILL drive 30 minutes out of my way to another store where the manager gleefully refunded us $45 last year for a shrimp tray which the deli employees did not thaw prior to us picking it up for a picnic, even after we thawed it in the sink and ate the shrimp. He was pleasant on the phone, alerted the courtesy desk staff that I would be coming, and they were very prompt and polite in dealing with the issue and sending me on my way.

Now, in 5 years I have actually seen in person the store manager for the Bryan location twice. Both times he looked as though he was making a run for the door to escape.

You know what they say...attitude reflects leadership. I have to agree.
