Just a heads up for Providian/Washington Mutual. I have a WaMu Platinum card (does not make any difference whether it is Platinum or Peanut Butter, according to WaMu CS . . . service is the same) with a $30K credit line. I attempted to put a $1200 charge on the card; it was not authorized automatically; the store graciously allowed me to call WaMu; WaMu had me on hold for 40+ minutes, then subjected me to a series of obscure, annoying, and downright bizarre verification questions which lasted nearly 15 minutes!! They approved the charge. In 40+ years of dealing with credit card companies, I have never experienced such lousy, annoying "service". The terms of the card are great, but customer service does not exist. I am not alone in my experience . . . they were just ranked in the top 10 worst customer service companies in the U.S. Google them to see more.

Wow..a credit card company that actually wants to "verify" that you are the card holder.
The purchase may have been outside of the normal pattern for you and triggered this security flag. You may have found this anoying, but what if someone had gotten hold of your credit card. I seriously doubt that you have minded this at all, in fact I bet you would have been very happy that they were able to stop a fradulent charge.
You may have felt that the questions were obscure. But they are obscure for a reason. They gave you questions that only you would know, if it was a thief they would not have been able to answer them.
As to your 40 minute wait, I can't say that that is right if in fact you did wait that long. However, the couple of times I needed to call them I was on hold for no more than a few minutes.
