We purchased a one week two bedroom vacation in Westgate Vacation Villas. On January 7th,2002 we decided to purchase a condominium timeshare in Town Center based on information that was told to us before the purchase. We were told that we had a 2 bedroom condo for 2 weeks and a 1 bedroom lockoff for 1 week each year. We were also told that we could purchase extra weeks for $299.00 per week. In addition to this we were given a free 2 year membership to Ice Gallery. We were told that through Ice Gallery that we could cruise for a 7 day expedition for $350.00 p/p and that we should never exchange one of our timeshare weeks for the cruise because it was so reasonible. This seemed like a good investment. When coming back to Michigan We found out that I was laid-off from work. We called to cancel the timeshare. The representative spoke to her manager to get the same condo with the same terms for a nice reduction in price. The representative said that the original contract would be canceled and a new contract would need to be activated, but we would have to sign the new contract. However, once the information was faxed over to us in the representatives handwriting there were things that were questionable. When I decided to investigate the timeshare deal, I had a hard time getting immediate answers. The first thing that I found out was that the condo was good for 1 week use in the 2 bedroom and 1 week in the 1 bedroom. The epresentative pacified us by saying that she would automatically upgrade us to 1 week in a 2 bedroom and 2 weeks in a 1 bedroom, even though this was not what we were told in the beginning. After this we questioned other things that were told to us. I found out that If we wanted to purchase an extra week it would cost us $199.00 per NIGHT!!!! I had a hard time getting information through Ice Gallery because they told me it would take at least 6 weeks to receive my membership. I kept calling hoping that I would reach the right person that would give me information even without an activated membership. It took me about 10 days to reach the right person. I asked for a price on a 7 day cruise with the membership. I asked for a week that was of season to the Mexican Riviera on Dec. 8th. I was quoted $797.00 per adult and $330 per child. The thing that was aggravating was that a person could not tell from the contract that the information was any different then originally told. After this, I was furious. I called Westgate Resorts to cancel the timeshare. I was told I could not cancel because even though it was within 10 days of the 2nd contract, the contract would revert back to the original and it was over 10 days old. So I sent a notice of wanting to cancel despite info given to me.I decided to dispute the down payment on my credit card. I also complained to the Better Business Bureau on Feb. 2nd. I just thought that other people should be aware of this issue. Some people will tell you just anything to sell !!!

Westgate Time shares

Time shares have always been a bad buy. But for those who really feel they need one I make one recommendation: Never buy from the developer. Always wait for timeshares to appear on the secondary market, usually at half-price. People like you get excited at the new developments and jump right in, only to become disillusioned later and dump the property onto the secondary market, at a loss, for a patient, informed buyer to take advantage of

Lockoffs can be hard to understand.

The way the 3 bedroom lockoff works is this. You purchase the 3 bedrooms then have a choice. You can either use the enitre 3 bedroom unit for 1 week per year, or you can use the 2 bedroom side for 1 week and then the 1 bedroom side for 1 week for a total of 2 weeks every year instead of 1. It could be possible you interpreted the info wrong.
Here's a little trick that sometimes works. You use or trade your 2 bedroom side. Then when you try to trade your 1 bedroom side, trade it into a resort that does not have any 1 bedroom units. Many times they will give you a 2 bedroom unit for a 1 bedroom trade because that's all they have.
To those who say to never buy a timeshare, you have probably never vacationed in a timeshare. What a difference than the hotel rooms.
If you are accustomed to spending $150 per night or more for a hotel when you vacation, a timeshare is really the way to go. If you are accustomed to staying at a $60 per night hotel on vacation, then you should not buy a timeshare because you cannot afford it.

Lets Sue Westgate

I am a new owner and have just found out the lies we have been told and flaws in the contracts. I know of a few class action lawyers that may be interested in filing a claim against Westgate. The only way do to this is to have enough people on board. It won't cost you any money but we need people to get involved so contracts and experiences can be gathered. If you would be willing to help and get involved please contact me at (((ROR REDACTED))). Strength in numbers as they say and maybe we can recoup our losses and stop them from doing it to others.

Long Time Westgate Timeshare Owner

My wife & I have owned a week at one of the Westgate resorts for 5 years. My parents and grandparents both have been owners for over 10 years. Westgate has always provided us with the product/service they promised.
We have always enjoyed our stays with Westgate and feel we get a good value. The Westgate resorts provide facilities of an entirely better class than even the nicest hotels.
It sounds like the individual who filed this complaint purchased a unit, then tried to back out and was unable to. All of her complaints seem to stem from her failure to meet her commitment.
Additional weeks are indeed available at great rates at resorts all over the world thru her ownership at Westgate.
Timeshare ownership is not for everyone, and everyone cannot afford it, but it can provide you with very nice vacation options.

Timeshare? NEVER, NEVER! Big Ripoff!!

Victor, your first mistake was even considering a timeshare purchase. You have virtually zero chance of ever getting out of one. Even if you die, your heirs become responsible for all fees associated with it. The actual worth of a timeshare is less than 10% of the purchase price. I hope you are able to get out of it and consider this a bitter lesson learned. Good luck!!
