Got a call with 202 area code but unknown name on ID while out on a saturday morning, called it back and guy who did not speak English well answered saying "This is IRS". I said I got a call who is this, he said IRS in Washington DC, "is this ___" and he tried but did not succeed in pronouncing my name. I could hear background phone noise like a call center, so I said, "so this is the Internal Revenue Service?" and he said "yes, the IRS Dept in Washington DC".
So I don't believe this guy but let him go on, and he says as if reading from a script "We have looked at your tax filings again and found a problem in your 2009-10 return, we have recalculated and see that you owe $4200 [was something above $4000]. We have determined that this was from fraud and are taking legal action in the courts." Again I know this is crap because they'd only get in touch with you by an official letter and would never say they are taking action as the first step and in a phone call. Then it gets even whackier.
I say "Really?" and he says "Yes, and we have contacted the police and there will be an officer at your door in an hour". He was going to go on, but this nutty threat got me kind of mad at the outrage of it, so I said "That's crazy, this sounds like a total scam", and he said something quickly like "fine, don't call back", or "fine, you'll see" and hung right up. I used whitepages.com to look up the phone number of 202-280-7395 and see that it's a landline belonging to Ymax Oration, looked them up in Google and see other Ripoff Reports for them, no website.
Clearly a very fraudulent call center operation, seems quite criminal because I'm sure next step would have been to tell me that if I paid $400 or $500 they'd call off the investigation or something. Cannot believe they haven't been shut down, but do not believe a word of their BS! Was worth 20 minutes of a nice Saturday morning if it helps someone avoid issues with them.
