I called the ad in the newspaper and the secretary said the company was hiring for managers and everyone would be hired in as managers she then explained managers made about 4,000 a month so i agreed to an interview.

The interview was not like any other interview i have ever had they took 5 or so people in a room and did a demonstration about they crap they sell then took people in for individual interviews. The man did not look at me or did not talk to me he just looked over my application and said ok well you got the job. which was my first warning sign. he then proceeded to tell me i needed to come back the following morning for management school along with 165.00 for my training kit. I thought this was very odd but i really needed the job and it sounded good so i agreed. When i gave the deposit he kept mentioning about how you could get the deposit back at any time no questions asked if you returned the kit.

I went back 2 days later and told him i didnt want to sell fire extingushers to people and i wanted my money back. he said it was out of his hands and he couldnt give it to me, even though i had been reassured numerous times that no questions asked any time you wanted your money back it was yours. i left the office feeling sick knowing i had been scammed and i had lost 165.00 as well as additional income i expected to pay rent and bills. something really needs to be done about this.

i am only 20 years old so i should have picked up on that from the start. but something really needs to be done about this. its not right on any level!! so when you see safety enterprises runnnnnnnn far! its not a dream job at all! hell its not even a job!

Hi Melanie,

I have worked for Safety Enterprises for almost 9 years.  Over that time I have experienced people who have had similar experiences as yours.  Like everyone else, myself included, you responded to the ad in the paper.  You went in for the interview and sat through a 20 minute orientation.  During that orientation we detailed our expansion plans, our product line and our training program.

The first step of training is $3000 of retail sales experience.  We don't hide that or lie about it to anyone.  At your first training class this should've all been explained in detail. You have to learn to market the products or else you won't be able to train the people in your office.  That should be common sense.  You say you wanted your money back two days later because you didn't want to sell fire extinguishers when it was clearly presented as part of the training.  A small part, but an important part none-the-less.

What bothers me is where you say your manager "reassured you numerous times that no questions asked any time you wanted your money back it was yours."  I am not doubting you but I can assure you that is not the case and our managers should never tell you that.  On the first page of our manager manual it states that dishonesty is one way a manager can be relieved from a position with Safety Enterprises.

Unfortunately in situations like this it is often just a matter of someone hearing what they want to hear and not really what is being said.  Just because it's a deposit on our materials doesn't make it "refundable at any time."  I remember paying a deposit on my apartment in college and it certainly wasn't refundable whenever I wanted.  If I damaged anything it wasn't refundable. If I moved out early and didn't honor my lease I knew I wouldn't get that back.

Again, as explained to everyone, the kit fee is refundable upon reaching a manager position.  Had you done the work, that would've happened for you.  I am sorry it didn't.  And I'm sorry about the misunderstanding between you and your manager. I wish there was a way of contacting you personally to find out more information about this.  But I'm new to this site and don't know how to go about something like that.

You wrote this almost one year ago, I am hopeful that you have moved on and found a career that you enjoy.  I hope your life is going well and, since you're probably 21 now I am sure that is.  :-)
