I found out through the website Star Van Lines and called # 1 866 656 6683. Mr Russ attended and I told about the move. I told it is single bed room apartment containing 1 queen sized bed room, one chest drawer, two end tables, one coffee table, one tv 24 iches, one computer table, computer and a printer and few books, kitchen utensils. He gave an estimated volume of 258 cu. ft and estimated cost $900, promised to come at noon time on Friday 25h May 2002. He asked to pay 20% by check, but I said I can pay by only credit card.

I paid him 20% or 180 dollars. He sent me a paper by fax and I signed on it. This fax also had the estimated cost. The two people came in Ryder rental truck 5-1/2 hour late. Asked to sign on the blank frms before they will load the good. Increased the volume by two times and total cost to $2,172.

Calling every day but no answer or reply. Talked to Tom manager, he wants another 50% to be paid before he will even think of delivering the things. I do not think I will ever get things like TV, computer , treadmill. All new stuff, costing about $8000 - $10000.It is a rip-oof, gang members of MiddleEast, speaking Arabic or Jewish. What should I do, now? Please help.

Dr. Tohatgi,

I am very sorry that you have had this experience. These scam movers are operating all over the country, and like you, many of us have been victims of this fraud. Believe me, I understand what you're going through. Please take the time to make a formal complaint to the Department of Transportation (the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration)

Consumers may file household goods or other commercial motor carrier complaints via FMCSA's nationwide complaint hotline,1-888-368-7238 (1-888 DOT-SAFT). To further protect consumers, a commercial complaint form is now available on FMCSA's website at http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/. The form may be mailed or faxed to: FMCSA, 400 Seventh St., SW, MC-PA, Washington, DC 20590. The fax number is 202-366-3375.

With your permission, someone will call you at the number you have posted and give you some more information that might be of help. There is a consumer group working to help people in your situation.
