In March 2015 I purchased a $75 Visa Gift Gard in order to pay a bill online. The activation fee put the cost of the card over $80 When I attempted to use the card there was a problem and the transaction didn't go through so I called the number on the back of the card to speak to their call center rep. I was told Visa suspended the card & that they would replace it or find a way to reactivate the card by removing the suspension but there was a process to go through. They would take the information from the receipt (which I gave them) and the store information (also given). From there I would be issued a reference # and would be given a callback win 3-5 business days. Additionally, I was told it would be 7-10 business days before I would get a replacement card or have my card made usable.

They lied. No one called me back. I had to call them back; repeatedly! I was given the runaround and hung up on and spoken to rudely and even yelled at. They demanded additional information I had no way of knowing including the store owners cell phone number, his store # (a number associated with his right to vend their cards) and I was asked for a store journal from a visa authorized machine which he didn't even own, it turns out. They acted like I should jump through these outrageous hoops to get my money back! They asked for me to fax them my reciet which I did. They later denied getting the fax and asked for a 2nd copy and instructed me to call them to let them know I sent them the fax! Weeks and weeks passed with no sign of a new card. By now they admitted the card was worthless as it could not be reactivated.  They claimed my receipt was too faded to read (even though they had the information on that receipt from day 1).

By April they flat out told me I failed to provide all the information they required and refused to refund me either a card or my money back. When I complained they told me I was wasting their time, that there was nothing left to be gained from speaking to me and hung up. It's the most ridiculous thing I ever heard of! This company obviously thinks it's customers are dirt and treats them as such. They accept no responsibility for their product even when it's a gift card they suspended from use and failed to recall. I didn't buy a defective card, I bought a card they canceled because they thought it may have been hacked.

I've since learned this company has a very bad reputation honoring it's gift cards and from my own experience they will drive away anyone trying to get their money back rather than make restitution or fix their problems. It's the sleaziest thing I've seen. And it's highway robbery, simple as that. They stole my money. I can't warn people away from this company strogly enough. They are thieves. I bet if an audit was done Visa would be found to have stolen a million bucks from consumers around the world who have been burned on their worthless gift cards. I saw over 80 complaints on just a casual google search on cards valued between $400 and $25 dollars. That's a lot of money and I bet it's just the tip of the iceburg.

A Possible Resolution

AUTHOR: - ()

POSTED: Friday, May 01, 2015

It hasn't happened yet but Visa MAY be issuing me a replacement card afterall. I spoke with a very helpful person at the Visa sales office here in Atlantic Canada who instantly understood the problem; the call centre people are trained to go thru a process in steps. They go from A to B to C etc based on a one size fits all resolution sytem. My circumstances could not be resolved because of flaws in their straight line approach. This case was made worse because of how they do business. She however was very respectul and courtious and helpful although she made no promises. She took the exact same information which was presented to Visa call center staff on March 16 2015 and asked Visa to make good and replace my card which I'm told they have agreed to do on her behalf, not mine. It hasn't happened yet but I'm hopeful. And I do think the fact that I've posted on numerous sites like this one may have played some part in  influencing Visa to return my money. But I'll never do business with them again after the terrible inconvienience and abusive customer care people I was subjected to. I'm gratful to have found one good apple in a rotten bunch.
