All my credit cards are set up to be paid, no later than the 12th of each month. I have several cards including American Express Gold. I always pay my bills by the 5th of each month. This month (August 6 2007) I suffered a mini-stroke and was taken to the VA hospital in Phoenix. I usually pay all my cards in full each month by the 6th, but this month I was released from the VA on the 12th of august. The first thing I did when returning home; was to pay my bills. I was not 100% mental wise and at some point I typed in to the pay date for 2 cards, American Express and WaMu before discovering that I had set the pay date to the 15th instead of the 5th. When I discovered the mistake it was the next day the 14th. I called Amex, and due to my 100% never late policy they said not to worry about it. They noted the account and that was the end of that. I called WaMu and despite making a $248.00 payment last month (minimum was $15.00) They added a $54.00 late fee on a $15.00 min. payment. So, the payment went from $15.00 to $69.00 with a 2 day late period. They were intransigent and demanded $54.00 for being late 2 days (a mistake in typing 15 instead of 5) while Amex. had no problem. This was the first time in > 3 years with WaMu. They could see on the computer that I had corrected my mistake and even made a double payment. This bank will not work with you on a mistake, or even discuss it. YOU made an error and that's that. My original loan at WAMU was made by an ex wife for over $3,000.00 she promised to repay it, but when she got into trouble she just sent me the card and said, "sucker". I would advise against anyone doing business with WaMu, as they are worse than a loan shark, or thief. NO MATTER what your payment history with them, they are the quintessential thief's in a suit. You will be doing busines with phone collectors, not real bank officials. I'm sure they they a person who rings a hand bell when they can get over on you.

You're right.

Wamu could have forgiven your fees due to your history with them and your illness (which I am sorry for). It's not as though you have been often late and calling them to reverse fees every other month. If you have, I understand their point. If you haven't, I understand your point.

Interesting alternatives but

they will in no way have prevented what happened caused by the hand of the very person operating the computer as admitted to by the OP themself. It sucks what happened health wise but there is still no indication of exactly how any of this is the bank's fault or how it really would have been anyone else's fault but the OP's.
Amex threw you a gift-appreciate it for what it is. Seems quite self-entitled to expect it from anyone else.

You are using online bill pay?

If you are using online bill pay they take forever to post it you as well mail a check out to the business.
Shortcuts for credit cards suck
this site I have never had problems with
www.mycheckfree.com you can pay bills and add billers and if they are not on the list then you should go to the companies website and see if they let you pay online most credit within 24 hours and mycheckfree credits on that day.
I found out it is a lot quicker to go to cpsenergy.com and use ebill payment services then use wamu to pay them and target.com and sears.com vs wamu bill pay.
A lot of them can set up autodrafts.
The only reason I use Wamu Bill pay is to pay my credit union it takes 3 to 5 days for wamu to directly deposit my funds to the credit union.

If you have any balance transfer offers from other cards that would cover your entire debt with WAMU...use that as negotiating power with them...Tell them to either waive the fee due to your medical emergency or tell them that you'll balance transfer the balance out and cancel the card....If you do this, I'd advise sending a Registered Mail letter so someone in the USA gets it....If you try to do this over the phone you'll just get some service rep in India who won't care.
