I first subscribed to ADT services in October of 2007. The reason why I subscribed to this service is due to the fact that the condo that I was living in at the time was not located in a very safe neighborhood and I wanted some reassurance that my home would not be burglarized while I was away on business.

So I called ADT security services and they told me that they would send out someone to my house to give me a quote on the equipment installation and so on. Shortly thereafter gentlemen arrived at my condo with a catalog of different equipment asking me about the type of service I was looking for. I told this individual that all I needed is a motion sensor and a door sensor because I was worried of someone braking into my condo. I also informed the ADT representative that I mainly will use the service when I am away, oversees on business and I probably would not require this service in the year to come.

The ADT representative presented me with a lengthy contract marking the areas where I needed to enter my signature. When I asked to reed the contract the ADT representative assured me that it is a slandered contract that would not exceed one year. He also informed me that I would get a check for $75 if I referred another customer. Going under the assumption that I will not need to pay any penalty/fee after the one year period I sighed the contract with ought reading it.

After  ADT installed service at my house I referred there services to my boss who then authorized the installation of ADT service at my office, but I never received the $75 referral as promised by the ADT representative that came to my condo.

In December  2009 I purchased a home in a different city and sold my condo in Lowell MA. I recall calling ADT requesting to cancel my contract with them, but to my surprise they refused telling me that I would need to pay a hefty penalty ($900) if I do so and the contract that I actually signed is for a 3 year period, and that the act of cancelation would adversely affect my credit rating.

It is now October of 2009 and I have been paying for a service that I do not use for over a year, and again I decided to call and reason with ADT to end my contract amicably, but again the representative to whom I spoke to over the phone informed me I would need to pay $400 fine.

I believe that ADT security representative hastily pressured me into signing a contract that I did not get a chance to reed. Having sighed up to this service under false pretenses I believe that this is the way ADT does business. Having seen some other similar complaints I know I am not the only one this company ripped off and threatened.

Believe me I am not the type to complain but this company has left me no other option. If I can save another innocent consumer from being sucked into their deceiving contract and sales strategy I have done a good dead for the day.
