We purchased a home in January. It had an ADT alarm system in it.
We did not want to continue with the system and the alarm protection.
I called ADT and asked if they could remove it and disconnect the alarm.
Even though we don't have the package it still beeps when you open a door
and occasionally the box starts beeping. I was told this is because they
want to get you to sign up with them. It beeped in the middle of the night previouly and husband
got up to turn it off and set off the alarm. Which is so loud I thought we
would all go deaf. I offered to pay for the service and they said legally they cannot touch the system because
it does not belong to us. The previous home owners purchaed it.
Are you kidding me? They gave me the steps to power the sytem off.
Why am I stuck with this system now for life?

All in all if I would have called them to put service in my name they would be more
than happy to do that. It is unhooked now. But theire sneaky way of making
sure the thing beeps so you call them is not my idea of business. Can this be hooked up to someone
else's program? I just don't want to use ADT. But may want a security system in the
future.

Disconnect power from the unit. A few hours later the backup battery will be dead. Mission accomplished.

Unfortunately they are correct.
If this alarm system was something you didn't want when you purchased the house, you should have made it a contingency on the sale for the previous owners to remove it. Once you bought the house you bought the responsibility to have it removed.
Now, I won't say that their reason for not removing it for you is valid. But the end result is the same, they are really under no obligation to remove the system. You will find this very similar to other things such as Satellite Dishes(I can tell you that from personal experience).
But they gave you instructions on how to power the system down. If you are not comfortable doing that, find a neighbor/friend/relative or even just hire a handyman.
As for all of the sensors, if these are like most other alarm systems. Those are really just screwed into the walls/doors etc. Where you can remove them and just cut the wire(since the system is powered down. Then a simple patch and touch up of paint and you wouldn't even know the sensor is there.
