I purchased a hotel stay through Hotwire on October 27 for my father to stay in Denver October 30 - November 7 due to my mother needing emergency gall bladder surgery at a Denver hospital.  I purchased the travel insurance because that just seemed like the responsible thing to do.  We found out on the morning of October 29 that instead of an expected six week convalescence from gall bladder surgery, my mother had stage 4 cancer.  We were told not to leave the hospital.  I had the doctor fill out the required paperwork for a claim. On the night of October 29, my mother passed away.  On Wednesday, October 30, while trying to cope with the shock and grief from my mother's unexpected death, I submitted the claim, knowing that my father would not be needing the room after all.  Anytime anything is submitted to Allianz they tell you to give them ten business days to review it.  If they request new information, the ten business day wait starts again.

Finally, December 3, I found out that the claim was denied because my mother was in the hospital when I booked the room for my father.  I explained that she had passed away, and they requested a copy of the obituary.  I emailed that on November 15.  On December 3 I called and was told by Katrina that the previously submitted obituary was illegible.  At no point had anyone contacted me to let me know that.  I resubmitted it yet again on December 3, and called immediately to make sure they had a legible copy.  This, of course started the ten day wait again. I called again on December 12 for a status update.  I spoke with Joy and a supervisor named Gwen.  Gwen said she would do what she could to speed the process up, andgave me a false extension number to reach her.   I just called again on December 19, and was told it still has not been reviewed.  At this point, I am pretty sure that Allianz Travel Insurance is a scam that takes consumer's money with a false promise of coverage, and no intent to honor that promise.  In the ordinary course of business, that would be bad enough; but during a time of such grief and stress, it has been a remarkably difficult issue to have to cope with.
