I have been having problems with bank of america for 4 months now. They charged me for free checking in my business then charged me an over draft fee. They removed the charge for the free checking but never removed the fee for overdraft.

This started a spiral and could not get any help from my local branch. I have watched them have items in my online in pending then move to paid. Then dissappear and move back to pending.

I have paid over and over and over for free checking. I was told by one employee that I should just pay cash if i cannot get my checking account in order.

I have payed more in fees than I have made in my business account. I am going to remove all my money from Bank of america and I have been a customer for a long time.

I have read all the complaints on here and seeing that it is not just me I will make sure anyone that will listen what has transpired.

On the rebuttles. Of course free checking does not mean penalties too. But when they charge you a fee for something that is free and do not tell you and it makes your account go over then that is not right. Everyone look real close. Bank of america has over 1300 complaints. IVe looked up other banks and no one comes close.

Bank of America cares about no one but Bank of America.

Most of my money has already been moved and Im waiting on several more checks to clear to close my accounts.

Check your statements to see if you deserve a refund for fees

AUTHOR: Daemon - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, January 17, 2009

Understandably, you should not be charged a monthly fee for 'free' checking. Obviously, the bank agreed with you, otherwise they would not have refunded the monthly fees.

The question is, did those monthly fees cause your account to overdraft?

The best thing to do in this situation is math. Go back to your statements, and look at the fees you were charged. For instance, if you were charged a $10.00 monthly maintenance fee on December 1st, and then charged an overdraft fee on December 9th, because the account was overdrawn $9.99 or less, then the fee caused the overdraft, and you can be refunded.

If this sounds like your situation, Tim, all you need to do is prove to the bank that the monthly maintenance fee caused at least one overdraft fee, and the bank should help you figure out what other fees were caused by this same issue, as the spiral you describe can be fixed.

As for pending and posting transactions, look at your records. If you performed the transaction via a check card (debit card w/VISA or MC logo), it can take one to four business days for it to post. If your records for a transaction do not match what is showing on your statement, or your online banking, such as a different amount, or an unauthorized transaction, then you can file a dispute against that transaction with your bank.

Once a transaction posts to your account, however, the only way for that to be manipulated is through a dispute from either you, or the business with which you performed the transaction. The bank must send you notification of any dispute filed against you, or assist you with any dispute you wish to file against another merchant. If you were having problems online, then the bank's online department should be able to explain it, or fix it for you. Be sure to use 'Print Screens', if necessary to prove your point.

For the issue you were having with online transactions showing, and then disappearing, it is not likely that any bank would do this intentionally. Sometimes, a merchant will put through an 'authorization' for your transaction, and then not clear the transaction appropriately, and put it back through on another day. This happens often in a retail environment, when there is a rookie clerk, who does not fully understand the POS (Point of Sale) device they are using to complete your transaction. This may have been that retailer's bookkeeper canceling the original transaction, and putting through the correct transaction to balance their accounting records.

You should do the same. If you are running a business, it is imperative that you keep accurate records, and receipts to ensure that you can account for every penny going in and out of your business accounts. If not, then you are at the mercy of any bank you choose.

Your detailed record keeping can resolve this type of issue, no matter which bank you choose for your business.

Hope this helps.

What was the initial fee?

AUTHOR: Edgeman - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, January 17, 2009

You're saying that you had a free checking account and you were charged a fee that you are not normally charged and that caused your account to reach a negative balance? as this fee a "monthly maintenance fee" or something like that? If you don't mind my asking, how much was the fee? Did you get any kind of notification about this before you were charged the fee?

The reason that I ask is a friend of mine commented that his free account was suddenly charged a $20 fee. Apparently the bank stopped offering a certain type of account and his account was switched to a different type that had a monthly fee. He swears that he was never notified of this ( I don't know if that's true or not).

Anyways, if you're willing to provide a little more information, that would be great. This is beginning to pique my interest.

Free Checking

AUTHOR: Ken - (U.S.A.)

Free checking (at any bank) means free of service charges. It doesn't mean free of fees like overdraft fees.
