I've just been hit with a $29 fee for going over the limit on my Capital One credit card, yet I haven't made any purchases to cause me to exceed the limit, nor have I been late in making my monthly payment. The over-the-limit was caused by Capital One's finance charges. Their high interest rates caused me to go over the limit, and then they charged me $29 because of this. When I attempted to call to dispute the fee, I couldn't get past the automated line. When you hit "0" it tells you that this is invalid and directs you back to the general menu. Clicking on the "customer service" tab on the Capital One website takes you to a page that says "CONTACT US, WE'RE HERE TO HELP" with the picture of an acutal person which leads one to believe that you will be speaking with an actual person.

Yeah....where is the rip-off?

The credit card company adds interest each month. That is not a new concept.
If your credit limit is $500.00, and your balance at the end of the billing cycle is $495.00, and interest is added in the amount of $12.50 - your new balance is now $507.50. Guess what - that is over the limit!
If you only make minimum payments every month, you are really not paying down much on the principal portion of the debt.

Where is the ripoff?

Stacy,
What was your credit card balance before Credit One added their finance charge? What is your credit card limit and what is your interest rate? Your balance must have been very close to your credit limit for the finance charge to put you over your limit. If there was a substantial margin between your balance and your limit then there is indeed a major error on the part of Capital One.
Capital One has the right to charge you interest and to charge you an over-limit charge so I do not see a ripoff situation.
