CheckFree the online payment service - BE WARY!! They WILL access your credit info and DO SELL names and info to other parties. In very small print, they list all this in a Privacy Statement along with other info that should be noted.

I had requested a copy of my credit report and it shows that they accessed my info 3 times!!!! I have no idea why they would need to do this to be able to use MY money to pay MY bills. It goes without saying that I realize they would have to verify account info with the companies to be able to submit payments - but I have yet to figure out why they need access to ALL my credit information.

By the way, they also do not submit electronically. For most bills they actually mail out a paper pymt after they debit your account, so it's not even really faster to use this online service. CheckFree is not so FREE. Should have known better-no one does what they advertise.

another reason for the credit check.

AUTHOR: Greg - (U.S.A.)

Just wanted to add that another reason for the credit check is because checkfree usally fronts the cash for the payment. When you submit a payment online, most of the time we front the funds for the payment and than go into the subscriber account on the attended payment date. Its for the companys safty that when they come for your funds, that there is a good chance that it will be there.

First of all CheckFree runs a Soft credit report, and we do that only to protect YOUR security. Before we start paying someones bills out of someones bank account, we want to make sure you are, who you say you are! Which should make you feel more comfortable that someone can't find your personal info, sign up with checkfree and pay off all his/her credit cards using YOUR information. Our SOFT credit checks do not affect your rating. Also about the paper check thing, we are still saving you time and money. We can't send electronic payments to every company, some companies just don't want electronic payments, maybe because they are too small, or they like doing things the old fashion way. Do you think we like sending paper checks? Do you think we like spending money on stamps and envelopes and heavy duty machines to send out all those checks? NO, but we aren't going to say, oh sorry you can't pay that bill because your biller doesn't accept electronic payments...INSTEAD we say you can pay anyone you want to pay online, and if they don't accept electronic payments we aren't going to make that your problem, instead we are going to pay for a check to be sent out on your behalf. You should appreciate the service we offer a little better. We don't charge you extra to send out that check, trust me we are working hard everyday, trying to get as many companies as we can to accept our electronic payments, we don't even charge those companies to accept electronic payments from out company!! I don't care if CheckFree sends a check to one of my creditors, hey that's .37 I saved on a stamp, plus the envelope, plus the cost of checks, plus the time of sitting down and writing the check out, and then having to put it in a mail drop, all that adds up over the years, I remember I would pay about 7 bucks for a book of stamps and I would buy them about twice a month, that's 14 dollars a month, and that adds up over the years!! Sounds good to me! If your payment is late and you scheduled it on your due date we will even cover your late fees up to $50.00!!! CheckFree stands for you can be check free, as in no paper checks, not that it's a FREE service. THANKS CHECKFREE FOR SAVING ME MONEY AND PAYING MY BILLS FOR ME, AND ALSO CARING ABOUT MY SECURITY!! : )

Checkfree works as it promises to.

It is always advisable to read a service Terms and Conditions. By using the service at all, Checkfree's terms of service must be agreed to.

According to their Term's and Conditions, the information given can go through a verification check. It states: "In addition, you agree that the Service reserves the right to request a review of your credit rating at its own expense through an authorized bureau." The reason they do this is because they would need proof that it is indeed your money they would be using. The check is a soft credit check, and nothing on the report is changed. It would be a great world if everyone could abide by the honor system, but that's not going to happen anytime soon.

Never in anywhere on the MyCheckFree or CheckFreeWeb websites does it state all payments will be sent electronically. Working for a bank that uses CheckFree as a processor, I know the majority of payments are sent electronically. If it's possible to send an electronic payment, CheckFree will. Unfortunately, not everyone that people pay have the means to receive an electronic payment or a company's electronic payment receiver could be down. Paper checks would have to be sent out in this situation. They guarantee of $50 that they offer would still apply to paper checks. This is neither unethical practise or a rip-off as not only does it not anywhere say 'all payments are sent electronically', but it clearly states in their terms "The Service reserves the right to select the method in which to remit funds on your behalf to your Payee. These payment methods include, but are not limited to, an electronic payment, an electronic to check payment, or a laser draft payment."

The speed of the service is debatable; they guarantee the payment will post on a user selected date. Do you think the USPS is going to back a payment to a company for $50 on any late fee? I don't think so.
