I recently engaged Colonial Van Lines, along with two other moving companies to quote moving my household goods on an interstate route.  Two of the companies sent representatives to my home to review my household goods before providing a quote for services.  Colonial did not.  They relied on my memory of what was in the home and only asked for "larger items" to develop the inventory list and ultimately calculate the cost.  The initial quote provided (based on weight) was realtively close to the other two competitors.  Since Colonial was the lowest, I chose them for my move.  I immediately put $2,100 down for the move even thought the other two competitors did not require a down payment of any type.

I scheduled the move for the end of December but was very clear that this date was not firm based on the fluctating closing date of my home.  I was told that this was not an issue and all i had to do was call 5 days before the move to change the date.  As the closing date was set, I called Colonial 7 days before the move and rescheduled unit the middle of January.  The was done without any pushback from Colonial at that time.  A few days ago, I began to ask questions about overweight charges and came to find out that Colonial had not booked an exclusive trailer for my use.

I told the agent that this would be needed based on my experience with a previous move.  She then stated the only way to make this happen was to charge me an additional $2,000.  Now my total is over $10,000.  Secondly, based on closing on my home on a Friday in one state and Monday in another, the truck could not deliver on Saturday.  Colonial then increased my cost again by $3000 and said I needed storage fees to pay for holding for a my furniture.  I again was asked to apy another $550 down payment to cover the additional cost.

Being frustrated, I reached back out to one of the other competitors to verfiy the conditions of their quote.  I discovered that their price did include exclusive use of a trailer and they were not going to charge me storage for the wekend hold of my goods.  Therefore, the difference in cost was over $5,000.  I immeidately called Colonial to cancel my move and get my money refunded.  The call ocurred over two weekd before the new moved date agreed to by myself and Colonial.  I was told that there was no way that another competitor could offer that type of deal and that Colonial wanted to see the quote in writing.

I provided the quote (although I probably should not have) and asked again to cancel my move and get my money refunded.  The agent continued to attempt to revert back to the original quote and would not grant my cancellation.  After several phone calls I got them to cancel the move but was told they could only refund the the $550 deposit.  When asked why I was told that i did not give a 5 "business day" notice on the original date change because of the Christmas holiday that ocurred during that week.  Colonial wanted to deliver my furniture on a Saturday and sent emails from the agent on Sundays but they convienently did not count these days when it meant keeping my deposit.

I have since cancelled my move and am fighting to get my deposit back, even though i will still come out $3000 to the good if I don't based on competitor pricing.  I recommend that Colonial not be used as they had very poor business practices and a lack of overall integrity in their business dealings with me.
