I have a US Direct Express Debit Card with the Comerica Bank which is where my Social Security checks were direct-deposited. All of a sudden I found out that it was canceled, and done so without my knowledge or authorization. I was unable to use it while doing grocery shopping. I bet that everyone in line was thinking that I don't pay my bills when the cashier announced, "Denied". Very embarrassing. Now I am unable to buy groceries, medications, pay my rent or bills including one upcoming medical bill or make ATM withdrawals with this card. I am at a risk of being evicted for non-payment of rent, and my credit report will suffer. I have NOT requested or otherwise authorized the card cancellation.

Customer service at this bank is practically non-existent, as all they do is read a script at 40 mph without listening to the other side. No monthly statements are available. No questions answered. My card was NOT compromised and was in a good standing, still good until the next year.

All the complaints fall on deaf ears. Texas Department of Banking re-routed me back to Comerica Bank lol. BBB asked what resolution I want. I want the bank to be unable to close my card ever again, but alas, it's not happening. So I am back to the square one. Comerica Bank is holding my funds hostage, as far as I am concerned.

To add insult to injury, Comerica Bank grants only one card replacement that is free. As of now, it appears that this one is being used up as I will hopefully receive a new card in some future. If the above scenario happens again, I will be charged for the card replacement. The $$ fee multiplied by a vast number of users = a nice boost to the bank's revenue. Done at the expense of the aging baby boomers now on Social Security.

Direct Express has flawed security

AUTHOR: Christopher - (United States)

POSTED: Monday, April 08, 2019

Whenever a merchant reports potential fraud, Direct Express automatically closes out any Direct Express cards that have been used with that merchant. They don't contact the cardholder to let them know that they have sent out a new card to whatever address they have on file. It's a messed up system. Nobody should use Direct Express.

Your interpretation is wrong; go back and re-read the OP

I don't contest the notion that the bank owns the card, however I don't have the access to my money that I hopefully still own. . The reason was an alleged compromise. Furthermore, I did not violate any rules as you assert; where did you get that from?

If you go back & re-read my original posting, you will hopefully will be able to see my statement that the bank has never contacted me. They just went ahead and closed said card without my knowledge or authorization.  Which part did you not understand?

I don't know about "a lot of people" that per your speculation "run a lot of debt ..." I smell an attitude. In a few paragraphs of your response, you have developed a pattern of jumping to conclusions while demonstrating a total lack of comprehension. I will repeat especially for you, I am going to run into debt by being forced to use my credit card as opposed to using my now closed debit card that I consequently am unable to use. Can you comprehend the difference between the two types of cards? Google is your friend.

Oh by the way, my credit score is over 700. Your neighbors that "run a lot of debt ..." can't do even close.

Furthermore, there is NO account at the bank that owns my Debit Card as per your interpretation. It's weird but the account does not exist. The only thing in existence is said Debit Card which is where my Social Security checks are direct-deposited, this is the way it was arranged between Uncle Sam and Comerica Bank. I can post the 16-digit number since it's not working anyway. It ends in 74 if that matters. Heck, can even post the security code.

Moreover, I am not able to physically go to the bank. It's located in Texas, over 1,000 miles from where I live.   You don't expect me to drive a thousand miles to just say hello to the Texas branch of Comerica Bank, now do you?

Monthly statements are NOT available, whether you believe it or not. Your belief is actually immaterial; this is just the way it's been with US Direct Express ever since its inception. US Direct Express is a part of Comerica Bank. I was forced to keep track of the transactions manually on Microsoft Excel. The transactions are accessed through the US Direct Express website only, usdirectexpress.com.

Clear as mud? Thought so.

Some information about debit cards...

AUTHOR: Striderq - ()

First and foremost, the issuing bank owns the debit card, not the account holder. The bank has rules & regulations governing the use of the debit card. If you violate any of these, the card can/will be suspended/closed. Of course, this is done without any warning. If the bank suspected there was something wrong about the use of the card and contacted you saying your card will be inactivated on Thursday, a lot of people would run up debts and then say oh they're not mine.

If your card is closed but your account is still open, you can go to the bank and withdraw money for your purchases and get a money order for your rent. Any decision to go without is on you not the bank. By the way, what reason did the bank give you for the card closure???

No monthly statements??? I find that very hard to belive. The only way the bank could get by without mailing a statement is if you're signed up for online statements. From the Comerica website: 5 With Check Safekeeping your checks are not returned with your monthly bank statement. (emphasis added)
