I got engaged in January 2006 and immediately set out to find a dress. Being a plus sized woman I knew it would be difficult, but David's Bridal carries plus size gowns. The clerk was kind and showed me several dresses. I liked one, but only if it was available in off-white for $249. I was told that it was being discontinued and they only had what was out in the various stores. She told me she would check with other stores and locate the dress.
Three weeks later I get a call from the same clerk (name with-held because I went to high school with her), she said the dress was only available in white and would be off the sale price in the next few days. I decided I had plenty of time to find a better dress so I passed on it.
In September 2006 I went back to the same Vernon Hills, IL store to try on dresses again, this time I only have 3 months to come up with dress of my long awaited dreams (I'm a first time bride at 40!) Not only did they have the same exact dress (I have pictures from January), but now it's $550 even though they have the $99 sale going on. I asked about the January sale and was told "that ship sailed", and that it couldn't be the same dress I was referring to.
When I called the store to find out why the bait and switch from Janaury etc. I was told they didn't like those words and to kindly rephrase my comments. I told her I didn't like the advertisements for the $99 dresses when they specifically have nothing in plus sizes and that I didn't like getting bit**ed at by family because I couldn't find one of the $99 dresses which they promise on all their ads.
The store manager stated " I didn't appreciate you over the top brides giving me and my staff a hard time because of company policy". I told her that she had an obligation to inform her company that Plus size women don't deserve to get ripped off simply because we are between a rock and a hard place.
I phoned her supervisor, Aquanetta Dawson at 800-823-2406 ext. 5107 only to get a voice mail message which says someone will call me back in 48 hours. Nobody ever bothered to call back except for the salesman on the phone to schedule my appointment at my nearest David's Bridal.
Needless to say, I wouldn't buy my dress at David's Bridal if my marriage depended on it!!! I found a beautiful Simplicy pattern and I'll have the satisfaction of sewing my own!

$99 sale
AUTHOR: Db Consultant - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Wednesday, March 19, 2008
The dresses priced at $99 applies to clearance bridal gowns which have been discontinued ONLY; in other words, the quantity and sizes of $99 gowns will depend solely on the quantity of and sizes of clearance gowns in the David's Bridal you are in and vary widely from store to store depending on how many have already been sold. It's very much a limited quantity kind of thing. For example, our store has a vast quantity of plus size clearance gowns which would be $99 during the sale. These dresses have been on the racks for as many as 5 years sometimes and have assuredly been tried on by hundreds of brides which is why the company compensates for any damage with the $99 price point. You MUST know that marketing is huge for any business and you'll notice that in any advertisement, while they use the "$99 sale" to get your attention, it also states it is on select styles only. Don't feel victimized by the fact that they didn't have clearance gowns in your size. It's clearance. Would you feel any more victimized if the same thing happened at JC Penney's?
I never cease to be amazed by brides who wait until 12 weeks before their wedding and then act shocked when their options are all but extremely limited. You had time...and you chose to wait until you didn't. That's your choice. I can also %100 guarantee you that a dress that was $249 in January wouldn't be $550 in September. You'll have to trust we know our gowns-- that are our livelihood, that we spend 40 hrs a week with-- better than a customer who tried it on once 6 months ago simply because it appears to be the same based on only a picture. Many dresses are discontinued in Ivory and not in White, which is the only plausible answer to why a $249 style would sky-rocket.
I of course can't speak for every store, but the consultants at the DB I work for take pride in their work and are definitely not in this business to dupe anyone purposely.

No Rip Off
AUTHOR: Howard - (U.S.A.)

Clearly this is not a "rip off". The original poster is upset because a) they wouldn't honor a sale from January in September b)the exact dress she wanted was not $99 c) they had no plus-size dresses for $99
Where is the rip off? A)Not many stores are going to honor an expired sale B)There is no law stating which dresses should be marked down, the store can mark down whatever dresses they want - including just 1 dress(in 1 size) and call it a $99 sale C)Again they don't have to have plus size dresses for $99 (for one they take more material)
I hope your wedding goes well, but don't slam a retail store because you didn't get what you wanted.

Still Confused

I'm still a little confused here. The dress was on sale in January but it was not $99. Come September and David's is having another $99 sale and you're upset that the dress you saw in January is not $99 or is not available for $249 like it was in January.
David's $99 sale is a gimmick to get you into their stores. They have few if any $99 dresses and, if they do, they are floor models or taken off the mannequins. They are usually dirty and torn and need some kind of cleaning and repair. I'm not saying that no one has ever gotten a decent $99 dress there but most brides to be go to David's because of the advertised $99 and end up buying something else in their store.
There is no reason to assume that a dress they had on sale in January would again be on sale in September just because they are running the same promotion.

Let me clarify by saying that when I returned in September David's Bridal was again having the $99 sale! They did not have any dresses which were $99 at all. I went there the first day of the sale and not a single dress was availble for $99.

Sale Was 9 Months Ago

You're upset because a store would not honor a sale price you got 9 months ago? Sales are for a limited time only. And, for the most part, those $99 dresses at David's are old floor models that are soiled and torn.
