I went to this place about 4 years ago and I actually feel very fortunate because they only scammed me out of about $300. I sat through the presentation which was a mistake and I really felt like walking out in the middle of the video. I did stay and the group was able to walk around and look through showroom. The savings seem so incredible that you might feel like a fool by not signing up. I was pressured by the owner even though I expressed to him that I was only looking to furnish an apartment. He knew full well that a person only looking to furnish an apartment would not benefit in any way by joining DB. Most people will tell you that you'd have to by $25,000 worth of stuff just to break even on your membership.
Here is how I got lucky: I was sitting down signing the papers (like a fool) when I got a call from a really good friend of mine. She knew I was at direct buy and she was on her computer reading all the reviews. I had already given them the $300 but I hadn't finished filling out the paper work. After I got off the phone with her, I knew I was about to make a really expensive mistake. I wisely altered my social security number and left. I tried to get the $300 back but that wasn't ever going to happen. They had a collection agency call me about 6 months later about the payments that I had never made and I just laughed at them and hung up. Good luck trying to collect that with the wrong social security #. They stopped calling and my credit report is clean!

I'm not sure how long you have been affiliated with direct buy, but I'm telling you exactly how it went when I went there. I would suggest that you visit this location under the guise of just a regular attendee and come back and try to refute anything that I said. It cannot be done, unless they have changed their sell tactics, which I'm sure they have not.
You seemed to focus on the $300 but you didn't seem to say much about all the other tactics I mentioned, which lead me to think that you believed the other parts of my report.
So why would I be truthful about everything else but lie about not getting my $300 back? I spoke directly to the owner of this location in Queens and I told him I had a change of heart and wanted to cancel the contract. He said that he would extend the 3 day cancellation period and that he wanted me to come back in and have another look around and if I still wanted to cancel, he would do it.
I wasn't able to do it and by the time I got in contact with the corporate office, it was too late. Realistically, the owner should have just agreed to cancel the contract as soon as I told him I wanted to cancel it. Period. Actually, before I spoke to the owner, I was given the runaround by a few of the other employees. They were all trying to convince me that canceling was a bad idea. When I insisted, they said I would have to speak to the owner but of course he wasn't available at the moment. They stalled just enough for the 3 day period to expire basically.

I work for one of the marketing companies that gets qualified couples into the presentations at Direct Buy (and other companies) with an ethical bribe (vacation, electronic device, and/or coupons for dinner) in exchange for 90 minutes of their time to attend a no-obligation tour of the showroom. Every location has a 3 day right of rescission and many have a 30 day Change your mind clause, so it is hard for me to believe you couldn't get back your $300 simply because you handed them your money...especially when you hadn't finished signing or filling out the paperwork.
We evaluate each company's policies so we can be clear of knowing who we are sending our referrals to and would never work with a company that took peoples' money.
