I signed up for Energy Plus Electric Service at the Philadelphia airport when departing on a business trip in January. They were offering airline rewards miles and an attractive rate. Of course I asked what the catch was and the rep said there was none ...just a way to build rewards miles.
I wrongly assumed that US Airways had investigated their "partner." For the first three months, the rate was fine at .069 cents. After that the rate has been increased about 30% each month. I didn't notice it until I hit the summer months when my electric bill was double what it had been in prior years.
When I started digging I found out that their contract allows for 30% increases every month without notification. I immediatedly did some quick and dirty research and found that their rate is about 80% above the competition. I have immediately requested a service change, however that will take up to 60 days to complete. In that time I will have been burned by about $600 to $700. This is clearly a scheme to take advantage of un-suspecting consumers.

This is a follow up to my original report. I contacted the company to register a complaint. They responded promptly and offered to refund the difference between what I paid and a rate that was more "market competitive." They also stated that they could switch me to a different plan that would have that same rate fixed for a period of time. I accepted the refund and received a check within a couple weeks. I did not sign up for the alternative plan as I had already shopped the market and found a better rate. I am satisfied with the response, however I still believe that what I esperienced is an unfair business practice. Through this experience I have learned to be more careful with "reward program deals" and that it is especially important to read the "fine print" of any contract no matter how reputable the soliciting company may be.
