I hate to sound like a vain, self-obsessed girl, but my hair is my thing. I have a plain face, and a big nose, so my long, thick, dark hair compensates for that biological misfortune.

My long, pretty hair was getting way too long, however, so eight days ago I went to the Fantastic Sam's in Baraboo, WI to get a trim. I told the stylist that I wanted to look "just like I do now, but 4-5 inches shorter" and I wanted the same basic cut I had gotten last time, "long, loose layers with a few shorter layers framing my face".

There were only two hairdressers at the salon at the time, and one of them started on my hair, cutting the five inches off. She had me hold my head down so I couldn't see what she was doing. About halfway through she had to call the other hairdresser over to ask "how to hold the scissors in relationship to the hair to cut at this angle". The other stylist demonstrated for her, chopping off a huge horizontal chunk of my hair right up front at chin level. As she snipped the last few bits and parted my hair out of my face so that I could actually see it, she said "You're going to look like a whole new girl". My stomach churned. Didn't I tell her, and I quote, "I want to look just like I do now, only 4-5 inches shorter"?

When I looked in the mirror, my "face-framing layers" weren't layers at all, but full-on face framing. Not only that, but the ugly little short hairs go half-way around my head and aren't even. One side is far steeper than the other. I thought the word layers implied that the overall length remained the same, with just some shorter layers to give it more shape. Obviously, the hairdresser didn't get that whole concept. It looks vaguely like a mullet that's been grown out for a few months. Needless to say, she didn't get a tip - I paid and hurried out of the salon as fast as I could, and haven't gone in public since. It's been 8 days.

My complaint is that I think I was very specific about what I wanted and the hairdresser acted like she understood me completely, hardly questioning me at all, and never stopping partway through to check that she was on the right track. In my opinion, neither of the hairdressers that were there that day should be allowed to cut hair, they probably should not have been allowed to pass beauty school, they are both utterly incompetent at their professions.

It will be at least a year before I feel fit to go out in public to get it fixed. I go to school online, so I am capable of pulling that off - but if I didn't have that luxury, I would be outside the Fantastic Sam's with a picket sign and bad chop-job, warning people off. What has been done to my hair is completely unacceptable.

Gingerelle,

I am very sorry that you had a bad experience with Fantastic Sams. As each Fantastic Sams is independantly owned and operated, I personally wanted to tell you that I just opened the Fantastic Sams in Baraboo as of November 16th 2012. As you may have known Fantastic Sams left the location that they were in. However, I dont know the owners or what exactly happened I can only speculate. I myself am a hairstylist, and fully understand when you say your hair is your thing! I wanted to reassure you that I have 8 of the best stylist on my staff. I personally can guarantee you that my girls will listen to what you want.

I too went to Fantastic Sams in Summerville SC. I asked the girl for a "bob" and walked out of the salon with about an inch of hair on my head and in some spots less than. My hair is extremly important to me and I want it back! The manager of the store agreed to pay for my extensions but I think once he found out how much this was going to cost decided against it. He says he will pay for one of his girls at another Fantastic Sams to do it but I must purchase the hair. This is not fair!!! Rest assured I will not take this laying down! I have been trying to contact the main office all day and I will not stop untill they fix this problem that they created. Its not my fault that they hire incompetent employees.

I went to fantastic Sams to get my hair trimmed. I had just recently got a wonderful haircut up in Nashville, TN from a woman owns her own hair salon, who happens to live next to my mother. The hair cut was wonderful from there (have to get the place and give it here so others from Nashville, TN can go there !!! So as I said went to Fantastic Sams and got a hair cut..I told the woman how I wear my hair and I came out looking like I was wearing a mullet....OH dear...it took me 3 months to trust another one (I live in Memphis, TN and only visit my parents when the kids are out of school) It was horrible. Not only that but I took my oldest daughter in there , she also told them what she wanted and she came out looking like she had put her head in a blender!!! It was awful.... Never again will I go to a Fantastic Sams because they are FAR from fantastic.....

Not all Sams are the same

I must say that alot of the Sams companies have many inexperianced stylist but
i have been with that company for 7 years and if you get into a salon with the right owner then you get the right styist. Not all Sams hire stylist right out of school. The salon I worked for was the BEST in Las Vegas and I'm not just saying that but unfortunatly the salon had many owners until the right one came along and she was the best. She paid great and she only hired the best stylist too bad the ones she thought were great styist had bad habits of stealing so she had to close, but she had great stylist. So my bottom line is that if anyone feels uncomfortable sitting in anyones chair, you have the right to get up and walk out and call the owner.

i am an experienced stylist, over 10 yrs of doing hair. i have worked for several fantastic sams. every time i worked there,id be asked by other girls to show them and teach them basic cuts! one time i remember having a young girl just out of hair school ask me how to do a basic end trim on a customer. fantastic sams seems to want the new inexperienced ppl at their salons. that way they can pay minimum wage and no incentives! most stylists like myself leave sams for better salon jobs after gaining experience! to me,f. sams is the mcdonalds of hair salons!
