i called about working for fantastic sams, brockport ny. the owner who was very nice told me to come the next day for an interview. i went and she offered me a try,no guarantee! i started that sat and wasnt even allowed to fill out the tax forms, legal right to work documents, etc. i worked for 5 and a half hrs and she paid me by personal check 40% of my sales. she then told me if she was going to hire me. shed call the next day. she never called! fantastic sams international doesnt condone paying commission only, does not allow appts (i watched the owner schedule appts weeks in advance.) and what if i got hurt while working? id have no protection since i wasnt actually working for fantastic sams! stylists, please avoid salons like this one! if they dont offer you a job and put you on the books, beware!!!

#2 UPDATE EX-employee responds

pay base

AUTHOR: Jm33008 - (USA)

just a quick rebuttal as a former owner of a fantastic sams i have to say one of the statements you said is simply not true. not only do fs salons normally pay comm. based pay they are encouraged to do so from the corporate office. they believe this encourages the staff to be more productive. they believe while a stylist is on hourly they tend to sit around and try to collect a paycheck for doing nothing. i have been in the hair business for more than ten years and found this to be a real problem also. so with that much said that part of your story is just plain false.

Similar Hiring Experience

AUTHOR: Ash613 - (U.S.A.)

I was "hired" there last month out of the blue after I interviewed 4 or 5 months ago. I wasn't sure who I was speaking to at first, but I eventually figured out the manager who interviewed, ignored me while I did my demo cut, and just recently called me was the same person (she claimed to be someone else, that she was watching me from behind a mirrored window - BS). They were so short on employees that they just needed bodies in the shop, and one manager was running two shops 20 miles apart. They called me in, asked me to start, I said ok expecting to fill out my employee paperwork, tax info, and all the typical paperwork one fills out before starting a job. She said she'd have it for me the day after when I came in to start training. Well, for one she didnt show up the day she told me. So I came in another day early as she asked, and again she didn't show up until 15 minutes after the store was supposed to have opened. She never really trained me (unless I was learning how to talk/text on my cell while cutting a client's hair) except for showing me how to use the computer.

Anyways, I worked for two days before I got totally fed up with their INCREDIBLY POOR management, the owner's intense dislike for me and my heritage tattoos on my arms (the other stylist and manager were allowed to have theirs out, but I was picked out, likely because mine are in arabic) random work hours (and there was no input about when I could/would work), non-tipping clients, and a very rude stylist. At the point I left, she still had not given me my employee paperwork to fill out but kept telling me "tomorrow" (for 3 days). So I wasted two days and about 12 work hours there that I never got paid for. Meh. I've known others who have worked there with the same experience. One of my instructors from cosmetology school wanted some extra income and started working at Fantastic Sams part time, they promise $9/hr but when she got her paycheck, she was making minimum wage in our state (NOT before taxes). Another friend was told she was hired, then when she called back to find out the dress code so she could buy new clothes to work, they told her she DIDN'T have the job because they didnt have an open position (untrue, this is at the same time I was hired because they were really only half staffed at each "salon").
What a crazy place.
