If you're considering becoming a FRANCHISEE for FANTASTIC SAMS,
DON'T !!! Especially in the Southwestern Region.
As an owner I can tell you I was lied to repeatedly about several aspects, including sight selection, and how easy it was to find qualified employees. They mislead people about the true failure rate of their salons, and I was also told the less I knew about hair the better just to name a few.
Their owner training was a complete joke. After training by corporate, my local franchisor told me to ignore most of what they said. He said he would answer any questions that would come up after the business was open. The franchisor, who also owned a salon would suggest one thing, when in actuality he was doing something completely different in his salon.
The local franchisor was also to provide local technical training for my stylists. The instructor would alienate my employees, and give them incorrect instruction on how to apply the farouk color. The color they were carrying wouldn't lift properly for a significant number of my customers.
Over the years it became quite obvious to me Fantastic Sams, or the Regional owners haven't a clue as to how to how to run a successful hair salon. Every region across the country makes up their own operating procedures. In the region I'm familiar with, everything is pretty loose. Most owners do their own thing resulting in a lack of constancy. As long as you keep the Fantastic Sams Sign up, and pay them their royalties that's all they care about ! They don't even conduct salon inspections !! A prospective owner would be better off owning an independent salon and not having to throw away nearly $500.00 a week in royalties.
A few owners have become successful because they had hair experience, and/or had a good location. Fantastic Sams has picked some good locations, and some BAD locations. They claimed to have some demographic requirements, but it all depends on how desperate they are to open new salons. They will tell you any prospective location they pick out is a good location.
All they want to do is sell you a franchise and get you opened as soon as possible so they can collect their royalties. All they care about is making sure you have enough money to pay them !!
It costs about 125K to set up and open a new salon in the region I'm familiar with.
One other thing they aren't too forward about is, in most cases you will have to sign a personal guarantee for a multi year location lease. If you need financing for the leasehold improvements, most banks are reluctant to loan money (even in a good economy) for a hair salon business because the equipment depreciates so fast, and salons have such a high failure rate.
If you're a good owner, and follow their so called process, Its not uncommon for a fantastic Sams salon to loose $1000.00 or more per week, for a long time. If the salon drains you financially, and you try and sell it, the franchisor can prevent the sale/transfer from happening. They can and will take your salon, sell or give it to another owner, giving you none of the proceeds, and leave you stuck with the debt from the loan !
With people like that who are supposed to be helping you, who needs enemies ?

Dont Become a Franchisee In Arizona Either !!

The Arizona regional franchisor is desperate to sell more franchises in the state. His track record over the past few years for doing this has been dismal. If you see through all the lies you'll realize owning a Fantastic Sams hair salon is for the most part a poor investment and a venture that will most likely cost the buyer/owner thousands of dollars in the long run. Some owners have lost almost everything they own because they believed the garbage these people fed them.
The Arizona regional franchisor is so hard up, they have to lie to people and tell them half truths to get them to sign on. Many of their processes for running a successful business are simply ineffective and a bunch of BS.
If you try and sell your salon, the regional franchisor (who is supposed to look out for the owners best interests) will prevent the transfer of the franchise and attempt to take ownership of it himself & leave you (seller) with all the debt. There's a whole list of other dishonest and unethical things The Arizona region has done over the years.

My mother went there and they NEVER told her that everything that they did to her, there was a CHARGE for it -- an extremely HIGH and INFLATED charge!
My mother is used to going to the hair salon and they shampoo her hair ,put some sorts of rinses in it too,and roll it up and put the gel on it and then they put her under the hairdryer and then style it for her and maybe put some hairspray or whatever they use on women's hair.
Her favorite hairdresser was at a Gay Pride rally and so she went to the Fantastic Sam's because she wanted to look good even if Ferdi was notin his salon.
First it was $10 to put the rubber apron on her so that the water would not get on her dress. Then the shampoo was $25 and the detangler was $20 and the cream rinse and conditioners were $10 each and then it was $15 for her color rinse and $25 for the rollers and $15 for the blow dryer and $10 for the comb out and $12 environmental tax for using the hair sptray plus the eight and one/half percent sales tax and it took EVERY SINGLE DOLLAR my mother had and ALL of my spare change so we could get her out of there!!
And then that painted up, dyed black hair with the pencil eyebrows and Bidi cigarette hanging out of her big, yellow piano teeth had the NERVE to DEMAND A 25 % tip on top of all of the money.
I showed her the tip of my middle finger and finally got my Mother out of there!
Ferdi only charged $25 and he didn't want a tip.
But Mother always brought him something special she made herself --like tamales, pastelles, pralines, and her delicious flan!
Ferdi is like family to us anyway.
MY MOTHER WILL NEVER GO BACK THERE AND NEITHER WILL ANYBODY IN OUR FAMILY!
THERE IS ANOTHER CLIP JOINT CALLED FAST FREDDIE'S THAT USES THE SAME TRICKERY!
We don't go there either!
Jorge down the street with the old fashioned hot towel and straight razor guts MY hair!
