My 250G hard drive started to fail with SMART reporting some bad clusters. I googled Fields Data and their website stated prices starting @ $199.00. I sent the details of my hard drive and the fact it has bad clusters and asked for a quote to recover just the data from my user profile. Their website indicated the data should be recoverable and priced between $400 and $500.

I started to receive calls from Kris Nordberg offering up support for the steps to recover my data. At that time I told Kris I was only interested in recovering the 40G of data under my user profile. Kris talked as he was going to work with me and keep me up to date. For the next three days, Kris called me telling me the status of the recovery. Finally he contacted me and said 95% 0f my data (174G) was recovered. I reminded Kris that I only needed the 40G under my user’s profile.

I then received an email with a link to a server where my data resided. There was a directory structure of my users profile (40G) plus 135G of data I did not need. I called Kris and he told me the price was now $950 plus $75 for a hard drive that they would copy the data to. I reminded Kris that I did not request or need the 135G of data but was interested in the user profile data. Kris then told me the price was not data driven and the price would still be over $1000 for any or all of my data.

I told Kris this price was twice what I expected and that I would need a day or two to think it over. From that point forward, Kris's attitude changed from helpful to very distant. Kris would not listen to my requests for reduced price due to the quotes I received and the data that I wanted. Kris's responces became very short or nonexistent. I told him I thought the price was too high for this work and he said he would instruct his techs to reverse the data recovery and return the hard drive.

It makes no sense to me to perform the work, then reverse the work all for no monies. I would have paid Fields the amount near the quote but Kris would not consider it.

Now my expectations are when and IF I receive my hard drive back, it will be destroyed! At that point in time I will file a BBB complaint against Fields Data Recovery. I would suggest that you never use Fields Data Recovery. There are alot of reputable companies out there.

Fields Data Recovery practices pricing bait and switch.

This issue that I described has been resolved to my complete satisfaction. I misunderstood several policies as well as quotes. Since the most recent occurances, I wish to retract all negative comments towards Fields and Kris. I now support this company and their work.
