I received an offer to apply for a First Equity card with a 0% interest rate for 6 months and then a fixed rate of 6% there after. I called and questioned the offer and was assured it was correct and accepted the card.
I used the card for 6 months at 0%, made all payments above the amount due and on time. At the end of the 6 month period I received a bill with a 21% interest rate. I called and was treated rudely and was told "sorry we no longer offer that % rate". I wrote to the CEO of the company and received a letter in return form a secretary saying pretty much "oh well, we no longer offer that rate." I have applied for other cards to pay this off as soon as possible as the interest alone will take me a life time - they did drop it down to 16.61%, which is still outrageous and not in compliance with the original offer.
Beware, I have been advised by other really good people the same thing as happened to them and we have all, unknowingly and trusting this was a legitimate offer, we have been financially harmed in trying to keep our credit good and payoff the card.
This type of false advertising and rip off should be against the law and monitored by the government. It can actually cause one to lose a lot for a very long time.
I am an educated, 47 year old female, who thought she covered all bases and was taken to the cleaners. What a lesson learned, it has hurt me financially and will take me awhile to recoup.

The answer is simple: do not spend money you do not have on junk.
A house mortgage that is appropriate to your financial strength is the only debt you should have. Cars you buy for cash.
Some people who get laid off have to use a CC to get them through. They may have few other options. But this is risky. The solution here is to have a layoff fund (savings) that will cover 6 months to a year of expenses. When I was freelancing, my layoff fund would cover five years of expenses. I was, you might say, conservative.

FIRST EQUITY CARD - CONSUMER FRAUD

I have been a customer of First Equity card for 3-5 years and paid faithfully every month by auto bank draft. In all this time, I was only ONE DAY late with my January 08 payment because the bank auto drafted the next day and FEC decide to bill me a day early. Because of this, they decided not to honor TWO of their convenience checks to me, they cut my credit line from 13, 500.00 down to 8k, all in a matter of a day, they bounced the 2 convenience checks, I had no idea that they did this, they jacked up my interest rate from 21% to 31% and BEST OF ALL THE COBRA CHECK THEY DID NOT HONOR, KICKED ME OFF COBRA HEALTH INSURANCE FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE AND NOW I HAVE ZERO MEDICAL COVERAGE AND A SPRAINED FOOT, XRAYS TO PAY FOR, BLOOD WORK TO PAY FOR, ANNUAL VISIT TO PAY FOR, AND EMERGENCY ROOM VISIT TO PAY FOR.
AT THE TIME OF BOTH VISITS MY COBRA CARD CLEARED THE MEDICAL COMPUTERs. FIRST EQUITY CARD cancelled me AFTER THE FACT and they should be forced to PAY for all of these medical bills. I mailed COBRA 1400.00 last week, to cover 4 months coverage and COBRA wrote me a letter arriving yesterday 7-16-08 rejecting my payment and telling me I am kicked out, of COBRA, due to FIRST EQUITY DISHONORING my Convenience check. COBRA has a no tolerance policy for a dishonored check.
I will be sending First Equity Card, all my medical bills for the rest of my life, for pulling this disgraceful stunt. They are liars, cheats, and have caused me personal damage. They should be forced to pay for their gross actions of misconduct and FRAUD.
I am calling the Attorney General's office on them and the Better Business Bureau. Do not do business with these frauds. They are crooks and ingrates and they are going to get a good swift kick from me!!!
