I moved to a new address within the city and Gold's was no longer accessible. I went in on October 3rd, 2007 to cancel my account. I spoke with an individual at the front desk and was advised I had to send in my cancellation by letter. I asked if I may drop it off, and was told no, it had to be mailed. Fine.
Because my credit card expired, Gold's could not charge my old credit card because it was invalid. So, on on the same day I inquired about cancellation, I also cleared up my account and payed a small late fee. No problem! Account clean, I was ready to move on.
The next day I mailed in my letter. I received no ASF International bill for November, so I assumed everything was OK. I was totally wrong. I received a bill mid December, stating I owed money for 3 months.
I called Gold's Gym and was given an e-mail address for one of the account managers. I sent her an e-mail stating what the problem was. I did receive a reply asking for more information, to which I replied. Weeks went by with no answer. I called again, and asked for another account manager. I spoke with another gentleman that advised me he would promise to look into this. He advised me it may take some time to get this fixed, and for me to patiently wait. No problem, I did so, and 3 weeks went by with no reply. I tried the e-mail address again, no reply. I tried calling, but it seems like the account managers are always busy or there are none available.
I called ASF International to try and cancel my account. They are the billing authority, after all. I was advised that ASF International is "not authorized to cancel accounts".
I am at a loss. I don't know how to get through to these people. Apparently I owe something like $300+. I have not been going to the gym for the past 5 months. But to this date, my account is not cancelled.

#5 Consumer Suggestion
Credit Agencies demanding payment!

Re: Golds gym!
My only suggestion is to ask the Credit Agency to prove that you owe gold's gym the money they are as say you must pay. If you claim you do not owe it this puts the onus on them to go back to Golds and get the proof. Golds will have to review your account/claim and usually this clears up any problems. Also write letters to the president of the company with copies sent to the gym you are having difficulties with as well as to the credit agency.
Good Luck!

I didn't want to file a report because I had a feeling this was not resolved. Well guess what, today, may 26th I received a phone call from the credit agency telling me I owe Gold's Gym $280.00.
This was THE SECOND time they had apparently put me into claims.
I am furious beyond belief. Not only is this situation extremely stressful, its a very busy time for me and I don't have time to deal with this bs. I didn't realize it takes over a ******* year to a cancel a d**n membership!
If anyone has suggestions on how to deal with this, feel free to contact me. Will be looking at my legal options.

My contact called me back as promised. He found my letter, everything is good. He told me about the 30 day cancellation policy, and said because of the fact that I canceled my membership on the 11th, they need payment for one more month since the billing date was the 15th.
Whatever, I just want this thing over and done with.
I agreed, and gave him my VISA over the phone. The amount to be charged is $51. I will not close this report until my account is closed, and the "correct" amount is charged to my count. I'm worried they "accidentally" might charge me the $300 that was falsely owing.

It has now been over a week since I filed my initial report. I have not heard anything from Gold's Gym. I decided to give them a call. Turns out, the contact that was so accommodating last week forgot most of what we have talked about. He told me I will need to pay the amount owing, which is around $300. He said there is no cancellation letter, and in order to get collections off my back I would need to pay.
I reminded him of our last conversation, and the fact that at the time he told me he found my letter. He was clearly a little surprised, and claimed he will get back to me in about an hour. The clock is ticking, and my patience is running out. I almost feel like I should be compensated for the time this whole thing is taking. Horrible.
I will keep this report open and update this situations progress.

Funny thing is, I decided to call and give this cancellation thing one more shot after I wrote my report.
I'm happy to report I spoke with a gentleman, who was apparently a new account manager to the company. Unlike all the other reps, he worked with me on the phone as we were talking. He dug up my cancellation letter from from September 07, and advised that the company was at fault, 100%.
He also told me my account was submitted to collections as of January 1st, 08. He was very apologetic, and advised he will do everything he can to rectify this issue. He claimed I will have no problems because Gold's Gym was at fault, and they will speak with collections to reverse the effect. In addition, clear my account, and inform me when everything has been taken care of.
I can happily say I am very relieved. For anyone who is going to open an account at any gym, keep everything: receipts, contract, copies of cancellation letters, etc. If they want you to cancel via mail, ALWAYS use registered mail so you can trace your mail.
I was lucky in this case, but say Canada Post lost my cancellation letter, I would have no proof for backing up my cancellation claim.
Even though I am happy to have this issue solved, I am not happy about the time it took. 4 months to cancel an account is a long time. In addition, the only reason why this was resolved is due to my persistence.
