Had a membership for 2 years, which ran out in February 08. In October 2008, I signed up again on the 9th, and then went out of town for almost a month. During that trip, my situation changed and it made it impractical for me to continue the membership.

Today, 11-6-08, I called and asked that my membership be cancelled. I was given unadulterated legal noise about the iron-clad nature of my contract, i.e. my only options were to submit a letter that I have moved, or sell the contract to someone else (for a $100 transfer fee!). I couldn't get any higher in the corporate chain than the second-level flunky.

DO NOT PATRONIZE GOLD'S GYM UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!!!! If they don't understand that customer service generates far more business in the long run than being corporate jerks, they don't deserve your business. Find a gym that knows how to treat people well and reward them for their attitude.

Dear Former Employee

Gyms like this that require long-term contracts are taking advantage of clients right and left - just look at how many complaints are filed against Gold's. A gym that charges month-to-month is operating a much more ethical business. Yes, I signed a contract - but sometimes things change, and a business that responds to customer needs generates good will and good publicity.

It's quite obvious you can't read. Try going back to school for a year or two, and when you get literate, read my post again. Cretin.

What if you went to the gym and they said "I know you paid for a year, but somthing changed and now we're only going to let you workout for a month"? That's what contracts are for; you're making an agreement and are agreeing to abide by it. You're lucky that they would let you transfer it to someone else for $100; most gyms won't. They're not ripping you off if they are making you abide by the contract you signed. Grow up and act like an adult.
